Child Shoeing Horse

Welcome to Farrier Week here at OPOD, where we will be looking at what is becoming a lost art . . . shoeing horses. We start with this picture from 1928 showing a child shoeing his pony. The boy looks to be 8 or 9 years old. I would bet you would be hard pressed to find many children this age that know how to shoe a horse these days.

  1. It's a good thing cats don't need shoeing like horses. There'd be a lot of bloody farriers.

    1. I have to put my cat in a bag just to trim his nails!

  2. Kids who develop the competence to do things like this while young make for confident and capable adults. Whether achieving high scores on video games does the same is questionable.

  3. This is an adorable photo in any event!
