Today's picture shows a typical operating room in the early 1920's. The biggest thing I notice is the total lack of any electronic equipment. Also, it looks like the anesthesia is being administered from a can of ether or something like that.


  1. At least today they look like they are wearing gloves and surgical masks.

  2. Yes, it's ether, dripped onto a cloth mask over the patient's face. It was in common use well into the 50's. My tonsils were taken out under ether in around '52 or so.
