Massachusetts General Hospital

Today's picture is from 1907, and shoes the operating room at Massachusetts General Hospital. I would imagine that they are not performing surgery, as they are not so much as even wearing an apron.

  1. Well, I don't know about shoes, but the patient is still wearing socks.
Whatever they have in mind, they all look perplexed. An autopsy, perhaps?

  2. That is a remarkable photograph and definitely much older than 1907. From the style of dress I would guess 1850's which means pre anaesthesia and pre antiseptic surgery. That would explain the doctor leaning forward to restrain the patient by the shoulders.
