This picture reminded me of a toy I had as a kid, a spring-loaded mule that you had to load with all sorts of prospecting gear, until you broke the weight limit and the mule would kick everything out ... There was the pan, shovel, rope, gun, etc.
He looks to be carrying a large caliber lever action rifle.
I agree with Mark. A rifle not a shotgun.
That is not a shotgun it is either a Winchester or Marlin Lever action rifle with a tang peep sight.
