Bethlehem Gate

Today's picture shows the Gate of Bethlehem. The picture was taken in the early 1900's, but certainly it is reminiscent of the Biblical account of Joseph and Mary going to Bethlehem for the census. Probably little had changed from the days of Christ's birth, and when this picture was taken.

  1. What a lovely, evocative photo. It's the sort that makes me stop, pause, and reflect. Perfect.

  2. Evocative indeed, including the donkey, the man, and the woman. The photographer must have been a really good one, to make everything so clear, both within the darkness of the gate, and the buildings in the bright background. The donkey reminds me of an article I read in an archaeology magazine some months ago about donkeys being the beasts of burden in the ancient Middle East, more than camels. They were, this author said, the "pickup trucks" of the ancient world, not just the Middle East. People like Mary and Joseph had to use donkeys for their trip to Bethlehem to register for the census.
