Airplane Races

It always amazes me how quickly after the invention of the airplane, men decided to race them. This picture was taken in 1910, and shows the start of an air race at the Boston Aero Meet. How exciting this must have been to watch in the early days of flight.

  1. I am really weird. I'd love to go up in one of those flying orange crates - or even a hot air balloon - but an honest to goodness Boeing jet airplane scares me silly.

  2. My grandfather, b. 1878 in Norway, came to the US in 1890, remembered the newspaper stories and pictures of the first planes at Kitty Hawk, flew into the Alaskan bush as a passenger in the 1920s and 1930s, and lived long enough to see the first landing on the moon. Flight was one of the things that amazed him the most about living a long life.
