General Store

Today's picture shows the interior of a General Store. The picture was taken around 1900 in Westminster, Maryland. I really like how everyone is dressed nicely. Also, I bet the pot belly stove could really put some heat out in the winter.

  1. Stoves: baking on one side, freezing on the other.

  2. The fancy cash register has been turned around on the counter to show it off. This picture was posed, not a casual snapshot. Still quit interesting.

  3. The posed aspect of the photo reminds me of a classic taken on the Nebraska prairie by Solomon Butcher. The family had pulled their pump organ out into the yard, the better to include it in the photo. Possessions weren't to be mindlessly piled up and then tossed: they were treasured.

  4. I like the way the men's knees have rubbed a line across the front of the counter.

  5. I remember going into not a general store but a hardware store in a small town in Wisconsin in the 1970s to find the Old Guys gathered around the stove. This was summer, too, but it was the town gathering place. They were wearing overalls, light jackets, and John Deere caps, just shooting the breeze.
