Sailboat on the Nile River

Welcome to Egypt Week here at OPOD. We will be looking at old pictures of Egypt. We start with this picture from the late 1800's. The picture shows a sailboat on the Nile River, with Egypt in the background.

  2. A stunning photo. Is this a color photo, or a colorized b & w? t looks like a real color picture, but that seems too early for color. I know there's a specific name for that kind of sailboat, with the rolled sail at that angle, but I don't remember the name. It looks like it would hold quite a lot, and skim off down the River at quite a speed when the wind or current was high. Thanks!

  3. Lovely picture! That is specifically a dhow, used primarily by Arabic and Swahili sailors.
