Dispatch Riders

In World War I, much of the communication was still done via dispatch riders. The picture above shows couriers being used to transport written communications. The picture was taken in 1917.

  1. It's been a rather quiet week on the comments so far, but I'm really enjoying the subject and pictures, thanks for all your work!

  2. A very common scene, actually, in the Great War. You can find some German memoirs noting the ongoing use of horses in infantry units by officers this late, and can actually find a few examples of that in the U.S. Army as well.

Given their equipage, I'd question whether this photo depicts dispatch riders, however, or whether it's the mounted infantry section of a German infantry division. What the Germans called "White Riders", based on white being the color of infantry piping.
