Mother and Child

It must have been really hard to be the mother of a small child in the depression. The picture above shows such a situation in 1939 near Harlingen, Texas. Can you imagine the worry as you tried to keep your child fed?

  1. Being the father of a toddler and a pre-teen in this era of plenty, it gives me shivers just to think about the fear for your kids under such duress.

  2. I can't even imagine. And keep in mind this was before birth control was even legal!

  3. The mother looks to be hardly more than a child herself.

  4. Yet she's managing, so far, to keep herself and her child clean, however worn the baby's shoes are. Life must have been difficult, indeed, but she's clearly working hard not to let it defeat her. I can't imagine it.
