Today's picture is from around 1900, and it shows an old time barber shop. The picture was taken in New York City. Interesting to note it looks like they already have electric lights.

    Also, the barber on the left almost look like two different people, his large mustache well hidden in the profile ...

  2. Look at those chairs! So ornate. I wonder if they are selling cigars in the glass case on the right.

  3. The old time barber chairs are becoming a thing of the past. The new ones are horribly uncomfortable. But it comes down to cost, I suppose. The newer ones are obviously cheaply-made and no doubt far less pricey.

  4. Electric lights came about in NYC in the early 1880's. The first Edison plant on Pearl St. opened in 1882. By 1900, there were several competing companies providing electric power for lights.
