Observation Car

Today's picture is from around 1920, and it shows some passengers in the observation car of a passenger train. From the looks of it, I would guess you needed some sort of first class ticket to access this car.

  1. Yes, wouldn't it be nice if you had that kind of leg room on a flight? Everyone is so well dressed and look so classy. Looking at this photo I think that traveling back then must have been a big social event. Now we often travel in cars and don't really interact with each other. Not to mention a lot of people "plug in" to their personal communication devices.

  2. It was a pullman ticket that you needed, at least in the 50s.

  3. Rode from Des Moines, IA. to California on the train with mu folks when I was a kid, remember it well to this day. A few years ago in 2005 there was a 50th anniversary Gunsmoke convention in Dodge City. Decided to take the Amtrak there from PA. While not the same as the old days it did bring back memories.

  4. Very comfortable looking indeed.
