Mess Hall

We wrap up Summer Camp week with  this picture of a camp mess hall. The picture was taken in 1919 at Camp Ramachqua. One thing that strikes me about this picture is how fit and trim all the boys are.  No sugary sodas at this camp you can be sure.

  1. Nobody is smiling either...hmmm. Are you sure they are at a fun camp?

    2. So, are we to believe our kids today are much happier because they have an X Box and soda machines in school or is the food simply really bad in that mess hall?

  2. I was going to say the same thing that JeepGirl did. No smiles. Look more like a prison camp mess hall.

  4. Hmmm. Maybe they're not smiling because their meal was interrupted? I think people generally smiled less when photographed back then.

  5. In that era, boys of that age group were already doing a man's work. Life was hard for everyone and not all that certain from day to day. There was also far less foolishness as it was not tolerated at any age. These kids were more mature and serious than most adults nowadays.
