New Mexico Snow

Today's picture shows a rancher out in the snow in New Mexico. Cold weather is particularly hard on ranchers, because they usually have to be out in it, tending to the livestock, which themselves are really stressed by cold weather. This picture was taken in 1943.

We are still frozen here in West Texas. It has gotten above freezing in the day enough to clear the main roads, but off the roads, things are still frozen and slick.

  1. It is cold here today, in the 20's.

  2. We were supposed to have a pretty fair storm yesterday, but it pretty much fizzled out where we live. Ten miles away, Eldest Daughter got about seven inches.

I went out last night to buy bird seed (I swear, we put out more for the animals around here than we do on our own groceries!) and it had begun to ice up. Coming down our hill, I put on the blinker about 2/10ths of mile before the drive and pumped the brakes, but somebody came over the crest of the hill and I could hear their brakes squeal and the driver was really wrestling with their car. Scary, as we only have one lane in each direction, so there's no room for error.
