Hunter Gatherer Week Resumes!

Despite the protests, Hunter Gatherer Week continues here at OPOD. We have this photograph from 1924 where an Eskimo has just bagged a fine looking Polar Bear.

Yes, it appears that my post from last Saturday ruffled a few feathers. I think it was my reference to men these days being spineless woosies. This tends to not sit well with some people, who have a vested interest in men remaining woosies. I had lots of comments and emails on that one. Even the long silent Evil Nate Maas was stirred to comment, and call me a woos for being iced in and not posting for two days. Well, the ice storm knocked out power lines, so most people have not had electricity, which then also takes down internet service. Luckily things have thawed and I am again able to leave my abode.

  1. Wow, I can't imagine how thrilling (scary!) it must be to take down a polar bear with a bow. Interesting photo. Glad you're thawed out!

  2. hunting and gathering is a fact of our humble beginnings. And if more people were forced to hunt and grow their own food, perhaps they would be a little less wasteful.

    1. The best parts of the bear hide were usually used in making the mukluks (boots, very high tops) of young women. The long hair was an indication of how skilled her husband/suitor was.

And yes, it took a lot of courage to hunt a polar bear single handed. In the days prior to photography, the usual weapon used was a lance.

  7. I consider myself pretty manly. However, in comparison to a man who killed a polar bear with a bow, I'm a woos. Keep posting. These pictures are great!
