Sheriff

Welcome to Law Enforcement Week here at OPOD. We will be looking at pictures of policemen, sheriffs and deputies this week. We start with this picture from McAlester, Oklahoma. This guy has been sheriff for 30 years. The picture was taken in 1936. Is it just me, or are his pants riding up pretty high . . . like up to his armpits?

  1. It is a tendency of a lot of older men to wear their pants that way. I think it is an effort to hide the fact they no longer have a waist line.

  2. It's not that his pants are high; his head is just unusually low.

  3. Maybe they act to firm up his middle.... sort of early support pants. That zipper looks to be about a foot long. Wonder where his badge and gun are.

  4. Back in the days when it was more appropriate to use the belly to keep the pants up rather than to let the belly hang over and push them down.

  5. If someone wanted pants that rode that high today, they would have to make them themselves....there is no way you could buy them in a store!!!!

  6. They sure don't make chairs like that anymore.

  7. This photo was taken by Dorothea Lange (May 26, 1895 – October 11, 1965) was an influential American documentary photographer and photojournalist, best known for her Depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA). Lange's photographs humanized the consequences of the Great Depression and influenced the development of documentary photography.

    1. Thanks for giving credit to Ms. Lange. She was a pioneer in her field especially in a time when women were not encouraged to develop their talents beyond the household. I have a book of her images, many of them reflecting the tragic effects of hard times on the most vulnerable and forgotten.

  9. He does appear to have them hitched up pretty high.
My eldest daughter (18) commented,"At least it's better than walking around with your pants half-way to the ground."
    Point taken!
