Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe was one of the literary geniuses of the 1800's. However during his life, he had trouble selling his work. No one wanted to pay for his stories. He tried unsuccessfully to start magazines, and the magazines he worked for generally went out of business. He died a relatively young man, penniless and unappreciated.

  1. I knew he died when only about forty, but he sure looks old and worn out here.

    1. Being an alcoholic will make one look old and worn out - very quickly. But he was, indeed, a terrific writer.

  2. We're all familiar with his "gothic" stories, but I just read a 2009 compendium of his works, and he also wrote funny things with a delightful English-style twist of humor. It was a lovely surprise.
