Branding Cattle

Ranch Work Week continues with this picture from Colorado. It shows cowboys branding cattle. The picture was taken in about 1900. Branding is a very hard job, and not much fun for anyone involved. It is my impression that not a lot of branding goes on any more with most people using ear tags or other easier ways of marking cattle.

  1. This is one spot to welcome innovation. The old way is pure hard labor all day; more if you have a large herd to deal with.

There is still one job that, unless it is handled with a shot or pill, must be done manually to control and improve the herd lineage.

  6. Rollie's right. Branding season is in full swing here, and it's a very social affair. Everyone goes to help out, lots of food and beer, and everyone has a good time!
