Today's picture shows an Oasis in the Sinai. The picture was taken in the 1920's. I like the old car, and can imagine how refreshing it was to come upon an oasis after traveling in an un-air-conditioned car.

About this site:
I have been an avid collector of old photographs and documents for over 30 years. The photographs on this site are derived from material I have collected over the years. Some came from old family albums, some from material I bought at flea markets over the years, and some from government archives of public domain images, including the US Library of Congress, and the National Archives. We appreciate you visiting this blog, and hope you find it interesting.

Lovely contrast of the desert and oasis vegetation. The car seems dwarfed by its surroundings. Again, I bet finding gas was tricky at times.

What a neat picture.Almost makes you want to be there. Almost.
ReplyDeleteSorry, but I would not like to be there even today.
ReplyDeleteOnly way I'd want to be there is in a Merkava tank.

Are those little walled areas, like the gent is standing on, wells?
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Al about being there. I spent my high school years living in Phoenix, AZ which is in the middle of some marvelous desert. My dad used to say that Phoenix was made possible by air conditioning. It is possible to go through the hottest and most arid country in total comfort. When I was a boy, though, my friends and I borrowed the family station wagon and shot a movie in the desert north of Phoenix. We experienced the actual discomfort of the heat, and the noises of the insects, and the dryness. I found that I liked it.

I'm with you. I lived in AZ most of my life, and except for a swamp cooler in my house, I did not have AC in my vehicles. I did not mind it at all. You learn to adapt. And you learn where to find your oasis!
DeleteBeautiful palm trees, but oh, how dusty!
ReplyDeleteI believe that's a 1931 Model A Ford.
