Each day we bring you one stunning little glimpse of history in the form of a historical photograph. Enjoy!
About this site:
I have been an avid collector of old photographs and documents for over 30 years. The photographs on this site are derived from material I have collected over the years. Some came from old family albums, some from material I bought at flea markets over the years, and some from government archives of public domain images, including the US Library of Congress, and the National Archives. We appreciate you visiting this blog, and hope you find it interesting.

Ah! A picture combining some of my favorite things: Scouting, bikes, girls and my home town.
ReplyDeletePersonally, and I don't want to shock anyone here, but I think those girls were riding around and picked up these two fine young men. Those bikes have women's frames.
Dave,
DeleteMy thoughts exactly. Plus, Boy Scouts were probably there for a scouting event, and would not have had their own bicycles. Also, I thought it was probably set up by the photographer, as it is just too good to have been randomly snapped, in my mind.
I always pictured Boy Scouts helping out older people, but I guess they don't do that any more. I was coming out of the grocery store a few weeks back. There were several boy Scouts standing around the doors asking for donations. On the bottom of my cart was a bag of bird seed and a carton of sodas. I am 77 years old and was parked in the handicap parking space, NOT one of those boys offered to help me. And yes, I bought one of their candy bars as I went into the store.
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame, but I'll note that a singular incident might not mean much.
DeleteAlso, trying to do any of the traditional "helping" roles can be downright hazardous anymore. Some time ago I was in a work location where a young lady had a very heavy item that she needed to move to another room and I picked it up to move for her, only to receive a lecture about it. She sternly told me that she could take care of herself (all 90 lbs of her) and was not raised to require assistance. I replied I was raised to offer it, and was going to move it anyhow, at which point she accepted it with some apparently but reluctant relief. You just never know anymore.
Yeah, the rest of the troop is on the other side of the road at the far left of the photo.
ReplyDeleteI think it was just the girls hitting on a couple of cute boys
PJM, I can't believe I remember this but the Scout motto is "Be Preparred" and the Scout Slogan is, "Do a Good Turn Daily". I didn't have to look it up I swear!
ReplyDeleteCute picture.
ReplyDeleteWe do live in an increasingly rude society where people are taught to look out for number one and let the rest rot. However, there are still some mighty fine kind and considerate folks out there.
I might use this photo in one of my writing classes. It would be great for prompting students to write narratives.
ReplyDeleteThe young girls may well have "picked up" the Boy Scouts. However, both of those young men ended up in front, as "captains" of the girls' bikes, if you will.
In any event, I like the photo a lot.
Nice exposure for the shade, burning out the background. Try that with digital.
