Reading the Paper

Welcome to Eskimo Week here at OPOD. We will be exploring various photographs of these Native Alaskans. We kick things off with this picture from 1913. The picture shows an Eskimo Man reading a copy of the Saturday Evening Post. This is really an unusual picture.

  1. I use to love to read the Saturday Evening Post also when I was young.

  3. I agree with Anonymous. This looks like Matthew Henson.

  4. Did Eskimos know how to read back then? Even in English? Maybe picturing browsing.

  6. I couldn't find this image when I Googled Matthew Henson, but it did show up as a print on eBay and Amazon.com under "Eskimo Reading the Saturday Morning Post". You'd think this iconic image would pop up when you do a 'Matthew Henson' search.

  7. "The example and experience of Matthew Henson, who has been a member of each and of all my Arctic expeditions, since '91 (my trip in 1886 was taken before I knew Henson) is only another one of the multiplying illustrations of the fact that race, or color, or bringing-up, or environment, count nothing against a determined heart, if it is backed and aided by intelligence."

By Adm R.E. Peary, in the foreword to Henson's book A Negro Explorer at the North Pole.

  9. Whatever did happen to Mystery Person of the Week? I used to love that! I was computer-less for a while and when I came back...no more Mystery Person.
