Eskimo Hunter

Today's picture shows an Eskimo Hunter. The man is in a kayak, and is about to throw a harpoon. I am not sure what he would be hunting, but he looks like he knows what he is doing.

  1. I would say he was posing for the photo. His kayak is still on land and his oars are still straped in place.
But he could be hunting anything from seals to sea lions, even whales or walrus.

    1. I think you're mistaking seaweed for turf, and the paddle is stowed so it won't float away. But you are correct - he is posing for the photo.

    2. Yes, you are correct. I made the photo 200 % and then could see that it is seaweed.

  2. From the design of the kayak the picture was most likely taken in Greenland and the hunting target was most likely a seal.

  3. If you haven't already seen it, rent Nanook of the North from Netflix . . . it's 1922 documentary of an Inuit family that shows them building an igloo, hunting for and catching a seal, and so forth. It was made before movies had sound. Very compelling. An epilog states that Nanook died of starvation caught in a storm (he built an igloo for himself but couldn't hunt in the storm). A reminder of the harshness of their lives.

  6. I'll second "Aleut" That looks more like a Baidarka to me than a Greenland kayak.
