Cowboy Bar

Today's picture shows some cowboys with horses at a bar in Birney, Montana. This is really a classic picture and looks as if it could have been in the 1800's, even though it was taken in 1939. I would love to know what the inside of the building looked like.

  1. Aah yes, Birney, MT. I use to sell farm equipment in that area back in the 70's and was suppose to meet a rancher in Birney. As I was driving down the Tongue River Road, I blinked and almost missed the town.
He wanted me to meet him there because it was going to be hard to find his ranch. He didn't tell me it was going to be hard to find Birney.
It is a little town of about 100 people on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation.
And as I recall there are no bars (or places that sell any alcohol) allowed on the Reservation.

  2. I like those old porches.

  3. I would love to know what the inside of the building looked like.

    Birney Montana … Population 108 (2000 census)
It’s interesting that when you go to Map Quest and find Birney it’s out in the middle of nowhere…..not even a road going to it.

    Signs behind the bar …

Men at the bar in Birney….

The bar on Saturday night in Birney … (no beer sold to Policemen) …

    # 26 at this site is also Birney

I like the cowboy Kings jeans they are wearing with the turned up cuffs. Had a pair of those as a kid. The men who wore them….if they were smoking in a house and there was no ashtray, they’d knock the cigarette ash into the cuffs and get rid of it later.

  4. From the web:

    Doesn't sound bad at all

  5. I wonder if the cowboys had to worry about getting a IWRH from the local police.

That'd be Intoxicated While Riding Horse.
