Today's picture features Eskimo Berry Pickers. The picture was taken near Nome, Alaska in the early 1900's. I would imagine berries would be a welcome addition to a diet of mostly protein and meat.

About this site:
I have been an avid collector of old photographs and documents for over 30 years. The photographs on this site are derived from material I have collected over the years. Some came from old family albums, some from material I bought at flea markets over the years, and some from government archives of public domain images, including the US Library of Congress, and the National Archives. We appreciate you visiting this blog, and hope you find it interesting.

It appears that the woman on the left had a very good day, both of her buckets are full to the top.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they are like me, "two berries for the bucket, one berry for me, two berries for the bucket, one berry for me".
I remember my kids picking, and it went like this "one berry for the bucket and two berries for them"
I wonder if they had to keep a sharp eye out for bears while picking, because bears really like berries also, and for a snack they also like humans.
Deletewhat a wild life!!
ReplyDeleteOur dog used to eat all the berries off our bushes.
ReplyDeleteThere was a cat from across the alley that use to come over and eat all my strawberries and some of my raspberies.
