Each day we bring you one stunning little glimpse of history in the form of a historical photograph. Enjoy!
About this site:
I have been an avid collector of old photographs and documents for over 30 years. The photographs on this site are derived from material I have collected over the years. Some came from old family albums, some from material I bought at flea markets over the years, and some from government archives of public domain images, including the US Library of Congress, and the National Archives. We appreciate you visiting this blog, and hope you find it interesting.

I bet this very patient lady is looking for the serial numbers on burnt currency, the goal being to replace the damaged bills.
ReplyDeleteThat would be my guess also
ReplyDeleteI hope everyone had a nice Easter. I'm thinking that she is some sort of early crime scene forensic examiner. Maybe looking for finger prints? That chair doesn't look very comfortable.
ReplyDeleteI also think she is identifying damaged currency.
ReplyDeleteReading tea leaves? :)
ReplyDeleteI think that she is piecing patially burnt photographs together.
ReplyDeleteSadly, with my modern day sensibilities I immediately thought she was handling drugs. I look forward to the correct answer.
ReplyDeletestamps mb?
ReplyDeleteoldbear !
I'm pretty sure I have seen this woman, possibly in an old Pete Smith newsreel (he did many serious and informative ones, not just the gag-filled "Specialty" series)and she was piecing together badly damaged currency to reconstruct at least 50% of any bills she could, to reimburse whomever turned it in.
ReplyDeleteYou are all wrong. She is putting an old map back together again. It only looks burned beyond recognition because this phoot is black and white. PS you can tell who the "Gen Y" reader is can't you. I have no earthly idea and I can't imagine why someone would be paid to piece together destroyed currency. I eagerly anticipate the answer though! :)
ReplyDeleteShe's an archaelogist, and puttin together pieces of clay vase or old manuscript like the qumran scrolls.
ReplyDeleteIt is obvious that she is sorting and categorizing belly button lint. The job didn't pay all that much but it was vital to national security.
