Woman with Dog at Fake Beach

I always find pictures like this interesting. Did they really think we were not going to notice that the beach is fake and simply a painted backdrop for the picture? The picture was taken in 1913. I wonder if it was a portrait taken for the woman, or if it was a picture intended to be used in some sort of advertisement or publicity material.

  1. It looks like some sort of advertisement to me.

No snow yet. It is supposed to be in the mid sixties again today. So far we have had two maybe three days of winter. The rest have been rather like spring.

  2. Another hunting dog story was with Peggy was when she went into a point and I gave the command to flush, she went in and kicked up two pheasants, I shot them both, but didn't get a clean kill on one. I suppose I shot to fast in the haste to get them both. Well any way she took off after one and retrieved the first one and when she dropped the it at my feet she took off after the second one and ran right to the spot where it landed and then used her nose for the next 40 feet or so to grab it. What a hunting dog.

  3. 28 above on its way to 32 above.
We had freezoing rain last evening and it's recycle day today, and I had a heck of a time getting back up my driveway, until I got smart enough to walk in the snow. I didn't have to walk down, I just put my feet on the driveway slab and slide all the way to the bottom. I was sure glad I had the recycle barrel to hold onto or I'm sure I would have had to pick myself up off the ground.

  4. Who ever painted that backdrop really didn't understand wave action coming to shore did they?

  5. These weather reports are riveting, but it's helpful if you'd at least state the state - yes, each time. Some of us forget. I do know DADD is ND, but Myrtle? It is probably in the 30s on it's way to the 60s here in southern NV. Ahhhh.

  7. What a strange picture, the waves are going sideways. If it was an advertisement piece maybe the advertiser wanted the weird backdrop so that people would look harder at it and talk about it. The bating suit is very stylish for the day, maybe they are advertising bathing suits in this photo. 35 deg. with snow showers in the Boston area this morn.

  8. I think her feet look odd. You can't see her toes and she is suppose to be barefoot. Very weird!

  10. Don't get me wrong, I like this picture very much, it does make me smile. Jeepgirl is right though, Where are her toes? I didn't notice the missing toes, good catch. Maybe a picture with toes in it were a bit risque for the day and they brushed them out? LOL.

  12. I don't think the technical details matter in this photo - it's either an add or one of those "joke" photos people posed for in arcades.

I have two pictures like this of my dad and one of his friends taken in an arcade at Coney Island in New York some time in the early 1930s. One is of them them behind a "fake bar" backdrop; and the other is of them in a little boat.

    They're corny, but great.

PS - I wonder what type of dog that is.
