Teddy Roosevelt in Yellowstone

Today's picture was from 1903, and it shows Teddy Roosevelt on horseback, as he gets ready to tour Yellowstone. Teddy did a great job as president setting aside some of our most beautiful landscapes as National Parks.

  1. This is a neat photo. I am betting this is Teddy departing from the old Mammoth train depot which is the northen entrance to Yellowstone. Note the train in the background. re: Wolf photo - I got to thinking that the small canine in the wolf photos posted recently could have been a red wolf which roamed in the Oklahoma Territories in those days. They were much smaller and very coyote looking. I think they no longer exist in the wild and are endangered with only zoo populations.

  2. Nowadays the government would have us carry "bear spray" in the parks to defend our family. I wonder how Teddy would have reacted to that?

  4. Here is a link to an article I amassed from a number of sources and published on my web site.

It recollects how Roosevelt and the head of the newly created Forest Service, Gordon Pinchot, greatly extended the amount of national forests. Roosevelt had a very far reaching vision for protecting vast woodlands as well as creating national parks.

This is a good photo week PJM. Thanks for the great pictures of one of my favorite presidents.

  5. @John I imagine Teddy had a rifle or at the very least a gun with him.

  6. Astrocrabpuff,
I agree. I'm sure he did. I just wonder how he would react to current restrictions on self-protection.

  7. From what I have read of his penchant for saving the wildlife yet at the same time displaying half of them(humor) on his walls as trophies I would imagine him with a gatling gun and an attitude to match? Pepper spray? Poppycock! Bully old chap, lets give the bugger what for! CHARGE! He was one of our better Presidents no matter what his pecadillos? Kudos to Mr.Roosevelt for his beliefs and the way he stood for them!Thank you and have a good day.
