Each day we bring you one stunning little glimpse of history in the form of a historical photograph. Enjoy!
About this site:
I have been an avid collector of old photographs and documents for over 30 years. The photographs on this site are derived from material I have collected over the years. Some came from old family albums, some from material I bought at flea markets over the years, and some from government archives of public domain images, including the US Library of Congress, and the National Archives. We appreciate you visiting this blog, and hope you find it interesting.

I know
ReplyDeleteThe caption gives it away Adm Dahlgren
ReplyDeleteVery good Ross.
ReplyDeleteIt is Rear Adm. J.A. Dahlgren U.S.N.
RTD You got it, not me, I just happened to notice the file name on the picture. In the mobile version of this site, it's displayed right at the top of the photo.
ReplyDeleteGood job BTW
Does this mean we are beginning a week of ordinance designers? Or maybe U.S Navy week? Either way, great!
ReplyDeleteJohn
Adm Rickover would have been the logical segue to Navy week from nuclear week.
ReplyDeleteDahlgren is an interesting figure, but even more interesting is his son, Ulric. The one-legged spy, Col. Ulric Dahlgren, was killed in 1864 during an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The mission was almost certainly approved by Edwin Stanton, if not Lincoln himself and may have served as the impetus for Booth's later plot. Curiously enough, early in life, Ulric and Booth conspirator David Herold were classmates at the Rittenhouse Academy.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping it's the beginning of Cloak and Dagger Week.
ReplyDeleteRoss
ReplyDeleteI guess you have something I don't have. Nothing comes up on my computer, and I tried it a couple of times.
RTD
ReplyDeleteI'm using an IPod touch which would display things similar to a phone. On a PC if you select the picture, right click on it and select "properties" the file name also be displayed.
I think either cloak and dagger or the Navy would be great.
Interesting take on Ulrich, Nate
Good job, Roger & Ross. And Roger got it without the file number.
ReplyDeleteHere's an idea for PJMs next survey: Should Roger, aka RTD, be allowed to guess immediately & not wait 1 hour anymore?
How peculiar that PJM hasn't come around to acknowledge Ross's win. Is the contest on auto-pilot today? It went online at precisely 9am, like it was scheduled ahead of time.
ReplyDeleteThere's a secret way for everyone on all of them....
