Each day we bring you one stunning little glimpse of history in the form of a historical photograph. Enjoy!
About this site:
I have been an avid collector of old photographs and documents for over 30 years. The photographs on this site are derived from material I have collected over the years. Some came from old family albums, some from material I bought at flea markets over the years, and some from government archives of public domain images, including the US Library of Congress, and the National Archives. We appreciate you visiting this blog, and hope you find it interesting.

ReplyDeleteThis is Gaby Deslys.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is. Good job, Nate.
ReplyDeleteGood job Evil Nate Maas. Beat out again.
ReplyDeleteWow, Nate, that was quick. This is a rather obscure figure . . . how did you get it so fast?
ReplyDeletePJM
Congrats again, Nate. Who is she?
ReplyDeleteGaby Deslys Born November 4, 1881 – February 11, 1920) was a famous dancer and actress of the early 20th century from Marseilles, France.
ReplyDeleteShe also posed for some French post cards.
Great job Nate
ReplyDeleteSad story though
Thanks guys. PJM, sometimes I get lucky. I was at first taken with her turban, but then I started thinking the pearls might have more to do with it. Quick search of dancers with pearls turned up Gaby Deslys pretty fast.
ReplyDeleteIf you're looking for more fun, I invite everyone to my site at natemaas.com for a second contest, starting now.
Pretty famous dancer ,she died of a throat infection due to influenza. Operated on many times, twice without an anasthesia.
ReplyDeleteWITHOUT ANETHESIA!!! After the first time I think I would have picked DEATH the 2nd.

ReplyDeleteA dancer with pearls? Posed for French postcards? Dare we guess what next weeks theme might be?
ReplyDeleteI always thought I was pretty good, researching in the internet -- but I am like kindergarten bracket compared to Nate and Roger and PJM. I am not even at the starting line when one of them have the answer! But I'll keep peeking in here, to learn something each time I do.
