Lotta Crabtree

This is a picture of Lotta Crabtree. She lived between 1847 and 1924. She was one of the most popular actresses of the 1800's. Her career spanned from about age six to the end of the 1800's. She lived the remainder of her life in seclusion. She was never married, and preferred focussed on her work instead of sorted affairs with men. She required payment in gold for her acting, and carried her gold with her. When the gold became too heavy, she would buy property. She amassed a sizable fortune over her career.

  1. WOW, she was very smart for that time in history.
But I see she wasted some of her gold on a cigar.
But not on a bunch of gaudy clothing

  3. There are some of us who think money spent on a good cigar is money well spent...I wonder if she really smoked them, or if it was just a prop?
I know a few classy ladies who enjoy a fine cigar or cigarillo.

  4. I apologize for making slight fun of your spelling today, PJM. "Sorted" affairs -- would that be in descending order by the size of the gentleman's bank account?

    Just kidding.

  5. She looks like she may have been very pretty, though it's really hard to tell with these old photographs.

It's a shame she didn't spread her genes.

  6. When we lived in California, her pictures were plastered all over the place at old mining camps, historical places, etc. She always appeared very pretty from the pictures we saw, and her appearance changed frequently. Sometimes she was a blonde, sometimes she had darker hair. She also was seen in more than one picture smoking - so perhaps she was a smoker?!

  8. I wonder if she was one of the founders of Crabtree and Evelyn, the pricey bath store.

No wonder her soaps are so expensive, she probably worked gold into her soap, hahaha.
