Each day we bring you one stunning little glimpse of history in the form of a historical photograph. Enjoy!
Geronimo!?! Is that all you have? Would I do something so obvious? Please . . . are there any serious entries? No, it is not Geronimo.PJM
Mo,Welcome to the contest. Just so you understand, I ridicule people during the contest.Ha! Sitting Bull. No, it is not Sitting Bull. Is there anyone out there with their "A" game on this morning?PJM
I thought you might be rushing out to check the Handsome Jack project. ;-)Kiowa Chirf Sa-ta-na?
This comment has been removed by the author.
Bro. Raz,This is not Name Your Favorite Indian contest, this is Name the Indian in the picture contest. No, it is not Cochise.Sometimes I wonder why I even bother with the contest.PJM
Indy,It is no Kiowa Chief Sa-ta-na.I am not able to go out to Chickie Town this morning. Handsome Jack has the entire area cordoned off. That peacock has something up his sleeve, I know it.PJM
congrats on yer blogs of note. nice pic. Last of the mohicans...chingan
Daft Scott Lass,No it is not chingan.Hmmm . . . maybe no one will guess it today, and I will win.Time for me to start planning my victory breakfast for tomorrow morning.PJM
Roger,I was expecting so much more from you. Chief Joseph? That is your entry? No, it is not Chief Joseph.I have not had Crepes in a long time. I believe they would be a suitable choice for my victory celebration in the morning.PJM
Could it be Gall, Custer's nemesis?
Michael,It is not Gall.Wow, do they not teach history in school anymore?PJM
I notice my Arch-Nemesis the Evil Nate Maas is very quite this morning. Perhaps he is stumped and pretending he is not playing.Nate . . . Naaaate . . . come out and play, Nate.PJM
Is this Quanah Parker?
Poor, poor, pathetic Nate.Is that all you could come up with?Of course it is not Quanah Parker. The game continues!PJM
Ha! took a little vinegar out of old Nate Maas with that last comment.PJM
Grrrr! Plenty of vinegar remains. It sure sounds like someone's a little bold with the comments today. Perhaps it's time the UN stopped focusing on Tehran and started checking out the construction in Christoval.
I can not be held responsible for the actions of an out-of-control peacock.Nice try to divert attention away from your lack of success in this weeks contest.Perhaps I have finally bested you?PJM
Dem boyz gonna git dat fueden goin agin.
Shet mah mouth! Evry time dem two fellas haf some time off skoo, it gits bad right quick.
Is it John Ross?
It is not John Ross.PJM
Zerelda,Ebry time it dat Nate boy what starts it.

Ahs disagree. Ya doesnt see thet fine Nat fella bildin weapons an blamin it on chickins an sech. Its thet carpetbaggin PJM thet ya hafta watch.
Donna,It is not Chief Iron Tail.I believe I will be victorious this week and stump up all!PJM
Zerelda you bin sweet on dat Nate boy since you seen his page on yur putur. You jes hopin he comes around sparkin. Dat nate boy not intersted in yu, yu an ole lady.
Wild guess: Touch The Clouds, Sioux chief? And now, off to the salt mines!
Astrocrabpuff,A wild guess indeed. Not it is not Touch the clouds. Is anyone worthy this morning? No, none are worthy.Only I know the identity of the Mystery Person.PJM
Two Guns? Don't start celebrating yet, I'm not giving up.... yet! :)
Donna,It is not Two Guns.Hmmm . . . blueberries or raspberries in the crepes? I must decide.PJM
captain jack, modoc
Anon,It is not Captain Jack.Note to self- procure powdered sugar for crepes for victory breakfast.PJM
Chief Charlot? And with that, I must give up for now. Good luck with that victory breakfast, Mr. PJM!
Donna,Another one bites the dust, it is not Chief Charlot.Hmmm, should I have orange juice or milk with my Victory Breakfast. Milk, definitely whole milk.PJM
Iron Eyes Cody?
Hi Ross,Have not heard from you in a while. I wish I could give you better news, but unfortunately, your entry will not affect my plans for a victory breakfast in the morning. It is not Iron Eyes Cody.PJM
Is it JW Baker?
PJM;Sorry for the apparent lack of activity, I have been checking the site frequently, late in the evening. And judging by my attempt, you haven't missed much.I think you're on a roll with this one...
Steve,Not JW Baker.Note to self: call Mrs. PJM and ask her to pick up some fresh raspberries and whipped cream for crepe victory breakfast.PJM
Ross,Notice how Nate has crawled back in his hole. Finally, I will be vindicated.PJM
I haven't a clue but I am enjoying the banter. The Grimes sisters remind me of something out of the Ma and Pa Kettle flicks (with a little of the Sgt. York film thrown in for good measure). For those that might not know Iron Eyes Cody the famous "anti-littering crying Indian" was actually full-blooded Italian. His birth name was Espera Oscar de Corti.John
John,Interesting, I did not know that the Crying Indian was not an Indian. I remember the ad well though.PJM
Charity, ya swar yudnt tell a soul bout mah man crush. But yer one ta speak. Shet mah mouth! Yuve been all sweet on PJM evah on account o he dun came roun on thet shiny noo tracter, all smellin like moonshine. Ahs not one ta gossip, but ifin twas me, ah surednt haf traded dat kiss fo dat peacock feather.
Zerelda yu full of beans. Yu been smokin dat Wild Wood Weed agin in dat con cob pipe of yourns. Yu bes jes stop rite now, or I tell papa bout dat pipe of yours.
Is it Stand Watie?
Be he Running Bear?
PJM;I wouldn't count Nate out just yet, he's usually our ace in the hole.I too always thought Iron Eyes Cody was an American Indian. As John points out he was Italian. He did marry a Native American and adopt Native American children..
Mary,It is not Stand Watie. It has been a long time since I have won, but I feel today is the day!PJM
Ross,Nate is curled up in the corner quivering, unable to figure out his next move. PJM
Is it Little Bird?
Anon,He is not Running Bear, and for that matter not Walking Bear, Sitting Bear, nor Squatting Bear.PJM
Oscar Running Bear that is.
Karen,It is not Little Bird, nor is it Big Bird.Ha! A bunch of wild guesses is all I get today.PJM
Is this Blackfoot?
Anon,He is not ANY variation of Running Bear.Hmmm . . . getting close to lunch time. I smoked a Brisket all night over hickory wood. Bout time to go take it out of the smoker.PJM
Steve,It is not Blackfoot, nor is it Redfoot, greenfoot or Stinkfoot.PJM
now don't wet your pants with glee this morning as this continues, must really be making your morning.Happy holidays!I visit daily...really enjoy it!good fun.
I thinks dat PJM done stumped dat Nate boy dis time. Dat nate feller dun giben up.
Steve,It is still not Chief Joseph. Perhaps you did not note that Roger already guessed Chief Joeseph at 8:59.Jee Whiz, this is like trying to teach 8th graders. Does anyone even pay attention. No, no one pays attention.PJM
Give me a break! It's a list of 64 comments and my kids are saying, "Hurry, Dad, guess, guess!"
Is it Wolf Robe?
Steve,At least that was an original guess. A wrong guess, but at least it had not been done before.Wow, that Brisket smells good. EAM just made a potato salad, so I will celebrate my continued success in the contest with a BBQ lunch.Ha! I have stumped you all.PJM
Running Antelope perhaps?
Anon,Running Antelope? That is all you have? Please, you are wasting my time. PJM
Slow Bull, medicine man
Anon,It was not Slow Bull, who was from Oglala tribe. Yes, he was a medicine man, but no this is not a picture of him. This is too easy.PJM
Is it Sioux Chief Ogalala?
Steve,I am confused by this entry. Oglala was a tribe, not a chief. In any event, your entry is not correct.Does anyone have an even reasonable entry? No, no one has a reasonable entry.PJM
Trying my best to be "reasonable," how about Chief Little Horse?
Steve,Yawn. Wrong again.PJM
Is it Red Cloud?
Steve,It is not red cloud.PJM
Is it Conquering Bear?
Is it Chief Chauncey Yellow Robe?
Is dat steve boy jes gussin dem indians one by one. Dat gonna take a long time.
Is it Chief [Adjective] [Noun], perhaps?
Joe,It is not Chief Chauncey Yellow Robe.It is a nice name for an Indian, just not the Indian in the picture.PJM
Steve,It is not Conquering Bear.I must go enjoy my lunch.PJM
Dear Miss Grimes, enjoy your comments. Yes, just guessing... and having fun. Thanks. -Steve
Oskar,At least your entry was funny.PJM
Maybe Dakota Sioux chief Iron Plume?
Is it Bear Shield?
It is not Bear Shield, It in not Iron Plume.I grow weary of typing.I will from now on simply type "37" indicating an incorrect entry.3737PJM
Looks like it may be a photo of an older Wooden Lance?
I'm thinking a 37 for Comanche Andrew Perd-A-Sof-Py, but too good a name to not try.
PJM is out to lunch, and now literally so.
Steve,three-sevenI repeatthree sevenPJM
Joe,Three-Seven for you as well.PJM
How about a big 73 for Southern Cheyenne Indian Prairie Chief?
(His name was Prairie Chief.)
Joe,You are WRONG.Can I make it any clearer.WRONG!PJM
Looks like it could be Bird Chief, a Southern Arapaho.
Is it Little Big Man?
Joe and Steve,Your feeble attempts amuse me.Both wrong.PJM
is it the indian from the littering ads from the 70's ( cant remember his real name)
Anon,Not it is not him. See comments above for discussion on that Indian, who was not really an Indian.PJM
Is it Chief American Horse?
Steve,I suggest you stay away from Casinos. You are not a lucky guesser. It is not American Horse.PJM
I oppose gambling in all forms. Do not even play the lottery. Thanks for the advice, though.
Steve,Actually I do not gamble at all as well. I am against the things like the lottery, which robs from poor (ignorant) people.PJM
Could it be "Man Whose Name Is Not Found"?
Joe, Joe, Joe,The man has a name, it is just no one buy me knows it at this point.PJM
thanks for the info i did not know that he was italian maybe my whole childhood was all a lie, congrats on the blogspot award i stop by here every morning to see whats happening in Texas , keep up the good work. Todd from N.C
Is it Chief Blue Horse?
Is it Good Fox, a Pawnee?
I think PJM is fooling us and he is the 'Grimes' couple. Very funny.
Jim Thorpe (later years)
Is it Nah Gun A Gow Bow (aka Standing Forward)?
PJM, maybe my 8th grader-like inattention is rubbing off on you. Previous guess: Chief Blue Horse
come on lunch time is over give us a hint
Back from lunch.Still no winners.Wanna see my victory lunch plate?PJM
Ok, that's it for me, looked through literally thousands of photos, guessed the names that looked closest to Flat Nose pictured.Mr. PJM, fun day, thank you. Enjoy your victory breakfast! And Merry Christmas and happy Holidays to all.
Okay, looks like it's going to have to be the calvary saving the day again... I'm going to have to guess Curley.
Hollow Horn Bear
I'll admit it's a WAG, but I'll guess the Assinaboine lawyer Chief Wetsit.
Red Cloud ?
I agree with Joe in NC. I've looked through dozens of pics. Even if someone manages to guess it, PJM is proven himself an amazing collector of pictures. Where does he get them? This one would not seem to have ever been posted on the internet, and that seems pretty rare these days. Merry Christmas and happy guessing to all!
Anonymous, already tried "Red Cloud" and got 37'ed.
You beat me to the punch Nate. I came back in late as the "Gentleman Farmer" apparently slept in this morning. However, I think a school teacher should know the word "cavalry". :)
American Indian Movement (AIM) activist Leonard Peltier
Perhaps "Grey Eagle"
no se olviden visitar mi blog http://famaland.blogspot.com/
Danny, you're correct. Even the best of us make mistakes, so those that aren't the best of us, make them even more often. :D I have no explanation as to why I typed the wrong word, but calvary has saved far more than cavalry.
U guys are crazy. Fighting over a pic. Worse than a bunch of little kids fighting over candy. I personally think that's got to be Sitting Bull. You guys should paid attention when you had history. PJM, take a chill pill. This isn't about winning or losing. It's about having fun and whether you win or not, shouldn't have effect on your mood. Just shrug it off and move on.
Nate, my Lakota friends would question whether the cavalry had ever saved anyone. :)
Danny, funny. Although I just not too long ago read a compelling story about the 1st Cavalry rescue of 3,000 civilian prisoners held at the University of Santo Tomas in WWII Philippines, so there's at least one for you.
Unfortunately I must report that the Evil Nate Maas has won the contest.PJM
In my opinion that was probably the greatest rescue ever performed, given the conditions, time scale and number rescued. On a side note, the "gentleman farmer" seems unusually quiet this afternoon.
Whoops, he beat me to the return key.
Evil Nate Maas, congratulations! And thank you for saving us from more of Mr. PJM's insolence this week :)I thought Curley was one of the Three Stooges. I guess I'm the stooge.
Fry mah hide! Whut a man.
Nate! How in the world did you get this one?! Good job!
Hey Nate, how about a link to learn who in the world Curley is. All I get is horses with curly hair.
I think we should band together as readers and demand a new rule: No obscure native Americans!
I think we should band together and demand emoticons be made available for posting in our comments.Curley isn't really all that obscure.
Nate, did you mean Clarence "Curly Bear" Wagner?http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/21/AR2009072103268.html
Do I get points for predicting Nate would be our ace in the hole? :)Congratulations Nate!
As a former photographer and grandson of a photographer, your blog really speaks to me. Old photographs have a really special place in my heart. I have old photographs my grandfather took in the early part of the 20th century that are remarkable. I thought you might enjoy reading about special moments related to photographer with my grandfather in my life at my blog athttp://momentslater.blogspot.com/2010/11/original-facebook.htmlEnjoy.
OK, so Nate ended up robbing me of my victory breakfast once again. Next week I will destroy him. The gloves come off. No Mr. nice guy. Next week, I will win, oh yes, I will win.PJM
Azule,No, Nate got it. It was Curley, a scout for George Custer and the only US survivor at the Battle of Little Big Horn.PJM
Yeah, I came late to the contest. Today is my first visit. I am researching native women for some illustrations I am going to do of Sacajawea. Love the site! I would have guessed Moe or Larry before Curly.
Who the heck is this?! I see my history needs a bit of brushing up...Congrats on getting on Blogs of Note, btw! inmypalette.blogspot.com

Glad I didn't guess Kaw-Liga........
This sis Indian Chief Seattle... the author of the environmentalist manifest... and your best friend is General Eisenhower, isn't him ?
Did I miss the right answer somewhere or is it still open? How about Jim Thorpe?
I've only been following your blog for a couple of weeks, but I have a small suggestion...when you have your "Mystery Person Contest", it's great - my kids watch and try to figure it out. But it would be wonderful if you could edit the entry once someone guessed correctly. This particular contest had over 160 comments - skimming through them to find the identity of the missing person was time consuming. I'd rather be spending that time RESEARCHING the mystery person and sharing that info with my kids, than to be searching out the person's name though numerous comments. This doesn't mean I don't try to figure them out on my own - I do. But my grasp of American history is sketchy. I don't want my kids growing up the same way.
probably the most interesting blog page I have ever read... awesome!
