- I grew up in West Texas, and could not wait to get away. I got away, and went to the University of Texas, and then on to Stanford. I saw the world, and decided what I really wanted was to be in West Texas. So here I am, right back where I started. I had it all, and found it was not that great.

ReplyDeleteIt is Congressional Medal of Honor winner John Lawson, hero of the Battle of Mobile Bay aboard the Hartford.

ReplyDeleteIt does my heart good to see Americans like John Lawson being honored. It certainly would have been plenty to fight bravely as he did if he were white. But him being be part of an oppressed minority and find it within do this this is huge. Like the Tuskegee Airmen or 442nd Regimental Combat Team of WW2, you had guys that had a legitimate gripe with the America. Yet they rose above it all. Rather than protesting as victims, they chose to prove to everyone that they were first and foremost, Americans!
