Remington Typewriter

This picture is from 1908, and shows a woman by a typewriter. The picture was a marketing photo from Remington Typewriters. I would guess that the notepad was a dictation pad. It was fairly common for the boss to "dictate" the letter to a secretary, who would then go and type it up.

Domestic Update:

I have not mentioned the greenhouse in some time. I am pleased to report that it is pretty much finished. By "pretty much", I mean that the plumber and electrician still need to come out one more time to get the heater and radiant floor heat system finished. I have gone ahead and started trying y hand at growing things. You can see in the picture above that things are off to a good start. The big green plants are cucumbers which are growing extremely fast. The smaller plants closer to the camera are tomatoes. In the buckets in the corner, further back, I have a watermelon, a jalapeƱo, and two bell peppers. I am trying different things to see what works the best. Hopefully, I will see some blooms fairly soon.

  1. I have found that in the absence of bees to do your pollinating for, you need to help them out.
I have done two things to help set on "fruit". The first is to spray the back of the tomato blossom with BONIDE Tomato and Blossom Set Spray.
I get mine form the local nursery. Spray it on the very first blossoms. But you will have to keep spraying the new blossoms. All my friends can't figure out why my plants set on fruit right away in the spring.
Second is when you vine plants start to flower. get a Q-TIP and make like a bee butt. You pick up pollen from the first flower and then go from one flower to another spreading the pollen from plant to plant. I like to go 2 times through them all.
But then maybe all that info was with the instruction to grow stuff in a green house.

  2. Speaking of Steno pads, or shorthand. My first wife kept a diary in which she make some entries in shorthand. As are married life went on she started to act a little strange. I start to wonder about things and got the short hand pages decoded. Found out she was writing down her "wonderful" times with her new younger boyfriend.

Wow, that's the most awful shorthand story i've ever heard.

  4. I love her hairdo. I learned shorthand in school too - but when I started working, everyone used the microcassette recorders.

It was easier - because you could play it back if they spoke too quickly.

  6. Yup... love her hair.. ITS so thick!

Finally convinced my husband that we need a greenhouse!! We only have room for 10x12 and some of that room will be occupied by my outdoor plants that have to winter inside. I'm still so excited!!!! Still thinking... do I want hydroponics or aquaponics or plain old dirt. Whichever I choose it will be on a very small scale.

MY name is Lea, too. I've never known anyone else who had that. My mother made it up (or so she thought.)
