Each day we bring you one stunning little glimpse of history in the form of a historical photograph. Enjoy!
About this site:
I have been an avid collector of old photographs and documents for over 30 years. The photographs on this site are derived from material I have collected over the years. Some came from old family albums, some from material I bought at flea markets over the years, and some from government archives of public domain images, including the US Library of Congress, and the National Archives. We appreciate you visiting this blog, and hope you find it interesting.

I have to wonder what in the heck were they all (or almost all) looking at?
ReplyDeleteThose are nice beach scenes, but I was hoping for some Coney Island rides....Steeplechase? Human Roulette Wheel?
ReplyDeleteWhat a crowd, but I find it interesting that maybe only 20% of the people there are in any kind of swimming attire.
ReplyDeleteI agree Roger. I've noticed that in every picture most people are fully dressed with heaps of fabric. I live near the beach in southern California. I can't imagine going to the beach in nice clothes. I also can't imagine the point in hanging out on the beach sand if you aren't planning to at least "wade" in the water!
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly, Mary Why stuggle to go to the beach, fight the traffic, just to stand around in the sand and getting your shoes filled with sand. Unless they are there to try and get a look at some bare arms and legs, because there isn't much other skin showing.
ReplyDeleteThen again maybe it is cooler down by the ocean.
Thats a really big black hat the woman in the back is wearing. I guess it might be some other dark color. I was also wondering what they are all looking at. Even the very small little girl seems to be looking in that direction and you would think she would be to short to see what was going on.

How about a Galveston week sometime? I guess it's our (Texas) Coney Island, and I do love it. We were there in August, 2009 and except for few things (like the north wall missing from the Flagship Inn), it was difficult to believe that they'd had a hurricane the year before. They cleaned up really quickly.
ReplyDeletemust be a hat convention
ReplyDeleteAs in all old photos,I'm amazed at the clothing styles. I can't imagine that going to the beach dressed like most of them could be enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that I find intriguing in this photo is the woman in the left foreground, who is wrapping something up in newspaper. I'm guessing that even on the beach, even in the early 1900's, babies' diapers needed to be changed
They must be enjoying the open space and the clean(er) air.
ReplyDeleteSomething to consider is the time of year. Yes they are at the beach. It must have been great to get away from the crowded apartments. However it might not be summer. Then the picture makes more sense.
ReplyDeleteI find it intersting and inspiring that they are dressed.
ReplyDeleteWow!!! Enjoying the fresh air and sounds of the waves and the beautiful view of the Ocean.....And meeting new people for the sake of meeting new people---Imagine!!!
Very different from the g-strings of today and the "checking out" mentality.
Wow! There are a lot of people on the beach. The Oregon coast has never seen that many people in one place, even on a good day!
