The Blankheads

Today's picture was taken in 1937, and shows Tallulah Blankhead, who was a famous actress of the day. She was in Washington DC for the opening of her new play, Reflected Glory. She is pictured with her parents. Her father, William B. Blankead was the speaker of the house in the US House of Representatives.

  1. And there in her Right hand is the almighty awful cigarette.
Now days you really don't ever see any posing with a cigarette any more.

Um, sorry but am I missing something? Surely her name was Tallulah Bankhead? Apologies if I'm missing some obvious joke contained in Blankhead!

  5. It seems that Tallulah's mother passed away weeks after her birth. I've found no mention of her father re-marrying, which raises the question, "Who is the other woman in the photo?"

  7. I was trying to figure out who that woman is (obviously not her mother) but it kind of looks like a guy in drag so now I'm confused. Interesting about her father being the Speaker of the House, I didn't know that and I'm hoping my daughter doesn't either (big movie buff, frequently says, "Yeah, I know" when I come up with trivia.

  8. Here’s another week with one of my favorite topics!!! I love classic films and the movie stars from bygone eras, and I’m very much addicted to the TCM (Turner Classic Movies) channel on cable.

Despite all of the technological advances in move making, I feel that most current films do not have the staying power and panache of movies such as “Casablanca” or “The Wizard of Oz.” And few actresses today have the elegance and mystique of iconic stars like Ingrid Bergman, Liz Taylor, and Katharine Hepburn.

The subjects featured so far this week date back to when my dad was a youngster. I LOVE Jean Harlow’s fur coat!! And . . . everybody smoked back then - it made you look sophisticated!! Just think of that famous scene with Bette Davis and Paul Henried in “Now Voyager” - it still gives me goose bumps!!

    PJM:

It sounds as if you’re off to a promising start with the new school year!! Good luck with your class. It seems to me that math is always the weakest part of the curriculum in our schools these days. It was like that when I went to high school in the ‘60s and early ‘70s, and it doesn’t seem to be any better.

  9. As a kid, I would see Tallulah on TV, and was always fascinated by both halves of her name. If her last name had really been "Blankhead" (instead of "Bankhead", as many commentators have already ponted out,) that would have been surreal-- a kind of anticipation of "Eraserhead."
