Each day we bring you one stunning little glimpse of history in the form of a historical photograph. Enjoy!
About this site:
I have been an avid collector of old photographs and documents for over 30 years. The photographs on this site are derived from material I have collected over the years. Some came from old family albums, some from material I bought at flea markets over the years, and some from government archives of public domain images, including the US Library of Congress, and the National Archives. We appreciate you visiting this blog, and hope you find it interesting.

Good Afternoon, The brand is Indian.
ReplyDeleteA quick search reveals that Andre Grapperon was a French motorcycle racing champion. He we bested by an American racer, Arthur Chapple, at Brighton Beach Stadium on August 18, 1913.
ReplyDeleteThis was board track racing which was very popular at the time. You can see the track in the background of this photo.
The track was constructed by putting down 2X4's on edge. They often weren't maintained very well and became a very dangerous surface on which to race motorcycles.
I don't understand what people like your #2 commentor get out of writing that kind of stuff.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't add anything to the blog and is just plain stupid.
I guess he just wanted to show how STUPID he was.
Rolo
It looks like he is wearing leather pants, smart, but no real upperbody protection, not smart.
ReplyDeleteThe comment just before was mine also not Rolo

You have to wonder exactly how much head protection the leather helmet would have provided in a crash. Interesting photo - the motorcycle is a bicycle with an engine!
ReplyDeleteI am curious when the racing sweater went out of fashion.
ReplyDeletePerhaps this is an early "crotch rocket". These bikes are popular these days with the younger men. Give me a nice touring motorcycle and I will be happy.
ReplyDeleteAs for comments made by GeezerNYC, Keep it up I for one enjoy the information you took the time to research and post.
Smokes! Riding on top of the engine like that doesn't seem altogether safe.
ReplyDeleteWhere to you find all of these photos? I am looking for old photos related to western water.
Nice Pics

WTF? Was a comment removed or are you talking about GeezerNYC? If you are, it is you that's STUPID.
The value of the comments section is the additional information readers add to the post.
Bruce,
ReplyDeleteSomeone made a potty mouth, say nothing post yesterday as Anon. When I saw it, I erased it. The comment was directed towards the erased comment.
