San Francisco Burning

This is yet another picture of the 1906 disaster in San Francisco. You can see the smoke rising from the city from all the fires.


Yesterday I felt we really were developing an iron clad case for me needing a tractor. I started with having a theme this week of a disaster. Then a poll where people ponder whether they would be prepared for a disaster. So, talk naturally turned to how nice a tractor would be in such a scenario. Then some yahoo pops up and suggests that a "Tiller" would be a more affordable, practical, and effective tool. I feel we should pause a second and look at the big picture. The goal is for me to be a gentleman farmer, and have a hat like Captain Walsh. A tiller would never elevate me to the status of "Gentleman Farmer". At best maybe it would make be an apprentice gardener. So, I would appreciate if we cold all remain focused on the big picture.

    I'm a PC and other dummy female living in the country north of yours.
    Can anybody tell me if a 1889 Liberty on one side and Eagle on other side of your silver dollars is worth more than one dollar today?

  3. A tiller would be used once maybe twice a year to do one thing and one thing only, till up ground. You would look funny wearing your Captain Walsh hat walking behind a tiller
    A tractor could be used year around for many, many different chores.
    No doubt about it a new tractor is in PJM near future.
    Make a new poll "Should PJM get a new tractor or should he get a tiller"

  4. Being silver is worth $16.00 an ounce, and there is about an ounce of silver in that coin, I'm going to have to go with the coin is worth more than today one dollar. Plus the 1889 silver dollar is worth something as a collectable coin.

  5. The 'official' death toll released after the quake was approximately 700 deaths. However modern research has revealed the probably death toll was well over 3000 individuals. It is the belief of some historians the city fathers of San Francisco hid the death toll as they felt it would discourage resettlement and rebuilding. It must have been awful for survivors for days, maybe even weeks or more.
    Yes, a Ford 9N is 65 years old but they still carry parts for them at NAPA. A very popular little tractor and ours runs like a top.

  9. Perhaps this has been brought up, but tillers cannot pull anything, except the person behind it. A tractor would be much more useful in more situations. Plus there's that Kenny Chesney song "She thinks my TRACTOR's sexy" not Tiller.

  10. Definitely a tractor is needed. You will also want a loader, tiller, and brush cutter. Possibly you could use one of those estate size manure spreaders to fertilize your garden when you clean your peacock palace. I would also go for a box blade for leveling the ground and maintaining your road.
