this dapper fellow looks Italian. Could he be Marconi?
ReplyDeleteJohn,
ReplyDeleteYou forgot to say what the temperature is where you are. I will be unable to evaluate your entry unless it is resubmitted with your local temperature included.
PJM
This is one of my favorite people, remember the marshall plan of ww2 ?. I believe it is George C. Marshall: Soldier-Statesman of the twentieth Century
ReplyDeleteI have minus 20 degree f here in southern minn
Rokke,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your properly formatted entry, with the required local temperature.
Unfortunately, this is not George C. Marshall.
Perhaps the frigid temperatures have clowded your memory of your favorite statemen.
Ha! Only I know the identity of the mystery person.
PJM
No guess, but our temp. is minus 24 with a wind chill of minus 49. here in North Dakota.
ReplyDeleteSo as far as I can tell you have a heat wave down there in Texas.
R
R.
ReplyDeleteWow that is cold. What temperature do you keep it inside your house? How do you heat your house? Is it expensive when it is that cold outside?
Inquiring minds want to know.
PJM
Do you have your Ranch sheds heated, or are your birds going to freeze their tail feathers off.
ReplyDeleteAnon,
ReplyDeleteLast night I put a heat lamp in the chickie coup. It is sealed nicely in that it has real windows, and doors that close and seal. I feel they should be OK at 11 with the heat lamp. Might not be toasty in there, but they huddle together on the perch, and the lamp should give them some heat. I did not put any heat in the peacock palace. I did close them up in there though. They dont like being couped up, and would rather roost on top of the palace, even when it is very cold. At least they are out of the wind. Hopefully when I go out this morning I will still have 6 peacocks, not 6 ice cubes. After it gets light, I will take them some warm water.
PJM
We keep the temp insdie about 70.
ReplyDeleteOur homes have 6 inch wall filled with insulation.
We heat with natural gas, and my gas bill was 160,00 in December.
We had days in a row that the temp never got above 10 below during the day.
R
That is suppose to be $160.00
ReplyDeleteNovember was $88
R
R.
ReplyDelete166 is not that bad, given the temps you have. I am sure losts of insulation is the key.
We use the fireplaces, and dont run the furnace. I can heat all winter on two cords of Mesquite. Mesquite is a very dense heavy wood, that burns very hot. I can get two cords delivered to my house and stacked for $350, which takes me through the winter. Only thing with mesquite is that it does put lots of creosote out, so you have to watch build ups in the chimney.
PJM
Here in Pa. the temperature is 18 degrees and snowing. Is it Emile Berliner?
ReplyDeleteAs usual, the mystery person stumps me. But I can tell you that he temp here in Groves, Tx, on the Gulf Coast is 19 degrees.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a clue who it is either, so I'll throw out Wilhelm Von Roentgen. I just want to add our 7 degrees. Above! In western Wyoming at base of Wind River Mountains. But, I grew up in Fargo ND and know what R is talking about.
ReplyDeleteHere in north Georgia, it is 13 degrees. Black ice all over the place and lots of accidents as people slide off the roads.
ReplyDeleteDang! Today's Mystery Person seems soooo familiar. I could swear I saw him in a newsreel once.
Or not. I shall continue investigating.
Trying to find who this gentleman
ReplyDeleteis. Temperature in Hastings UK,
0 degrees Centigrade, 32 degrees
Fahrenheit.
Sorry, I had to step out to Chickie Town for a minute. Happy to report all birds were doing fine. Fed them and gave them some warm water.
ReplyDeleteKaren,
It is not Emile Berliner
Pam,
19 is pretty cold for the Gulf Coast.
Judi,
Wow, that is not too bad for Wyoming, I would think.
It is not Wilhelm Von Roentgen
Marie,
Stay warm.
Hmmm . . . cold weather appears to slow contestants down on the mystery person contest.
PJM
Ray,
ReplyDeleteAhhh a balmy 32.
PJM
How about Robert Lansing, Wilson's Secretary of State?
ReplyDelete47.7 on the way to 70 in Tucson.
Mathan,
ReplyDeleteI would have hoped that the nice Tuscon weather would have enabled you to muster a better entry. Ha! no one knows the mystery person expect me.
Notice Nate can not even get the nerve up to make an entry.
PJM
It's 7° here in beautiful Fort Wayne Indiana. Being a single parent on a tight budget I have to be the "furnace nazi" and keep the house at 60°. We have a lovely old home built in the 1920's. It has hard wood floors, arch shaped doorways, stucco textured walls and I'm sure not much insulation. We wear plenty of layered warm clothing, socks and slippers and we manage to keep comfortably warm (although my fingers are always cold).
ReplyDeleteSorry I have no idea who the mystery person is.....just wanted to add my 2¢ about the cold conditions.
Heather,
ReplyDeleteWhen we lived in Abq., our house had a high ceiling and lots of clearstory windows. The house was situated wrong with the sun, so in winter we were in the shade and in summer we were in the sun. In the winter you could not keep the house warm. If you set the thermostat on 70, the furnace would run all the time, and the utility bill outrageous. So, we just set the thermostat on 60, and bundled up. You get used to it. When we moved here, #1 priority in designing the house was to have a toasty house in winter.
PJM
the temp in los angeles is a frigid 60 degrees F where John suffers
ReplyDeleteHere in Stockholm it's a lovely -16 degrees celsius (3 degrees fahrenheit), but us Swedes are hardy northern folk and we can handle it just fine.
ReplyDeleteAs for the dude... I don't know. I'm going with William Randolph Hearst. Almost certainly wrong, but why not :)
Oscar,
ReplyDeleteSorry, not correct.
John,
While we sympathize with your weather, we were hoping for an entry.
No winner yet!
PJM
I agree that the mystery person looks familiar, but sadly not a clue who he reminds me of.
ReplyDelete20* here in Austin.
Southern Bets,
ReplyDeleteAhhh Austin . . . just 3.5 hours up the road from me, and home of THE University of Texas.
But no contest entry?
PJM
Is this Harry Ferguson?
ReplyDeleteHeather,
ReplyDeleteManagement regrets to inform you that your entry can not be evaluated due to lack of temperatre data. While you might have included temperature data in earlier post, the temperature might have changed in the intervening time. Management will consider your entry if resubmitted with required temperature data.
PJM
Temperature here now is a balmy 25°.
ReplyDeleteWould the man pictured be Myron T. Herrick?
Joe in NC,
ReplyDeleteNice job on remembering the temperature data, but the mystery person is not Myron T. Herrick.
Perhaps I have stumped you all this morning?
PJM
While I also seem to recognize the photo, I won't hazard a guess at this point as none of my research has provided this particular image.
ReplyDeleteI think 'the man' is sticking it too you for wood. Here in Southern Illinois seasoned oak is going for about $50.oo per pickup truck load. And it produces far less creosote to worry about.
One more thing a tractor would be useful for, cutting and hauling your own firewood.
The temperature here is currently 9.7 F.
Dan
So far, yes. I'm wondering where the evil Nate Maas is today with his magical picture finding software.
ReplyDeleteStill 25° F here.
Danny,
ReplyDeleteInteresting info on firewood. Here, $175 per cord, stacked and delivered is the best deal. There are dozens selling firewood, and it goes for up to $250-$300 a cord. Interesting that there would be that much difference. I have both oak and mesquite. I prefer the mesquite as it burns much hotter than oak. Issue is loading the firebox with wood, and what temperature the house will be at in the morning. Using mesquite, I can keep the house warmer than with oak. I have tried several different things, and what works best is mequite, with the air choked back, it burns all night.
I use that powder to keep creosote from building up, but probably need to have a chimney sweep check things at the end of the season.
PJM
PJM
Joe,
ReplyDeleteYou all are like a bunch of blind lemmings without the Evil Nate Maas to rally you.
I feel I have this contest in the bag.
You never know if Nate is just not playing, or perhaps huddled in the corner fearful of even entering.
PJM
(I have NO idea who that is, but he looks just like Paul Newman to me!
ReplyDeleteI have no idea who the 'mystery person' is.
ReplyDeleteCurrent temperature in Redlands, California is 49°F. Today's high is expected to be 74°.
Shirley likes to keep the indoor temp at 72°; whereas, I would be fine with 66°. Our winter gas bill averages $85 monthly.
Or maybe just frozen.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I thought I adequately covered that earlier....
ReplyDelete7° - is the mystery person Harry Ferguson? Please sir, may I have an answer to my question, sir?
Or maybe that line is "Please sirm may I have some more?" I like my line better....anyway, gives the inquiry a nice "twist" wouldn't you say?
ReplyDeleteIt is currently 21 degrees here in CT although the thermometer registered 12 when I woke up at 7.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is Alfred Sloan. I asked my husband, who is much smarter than I am, but I think he is wrong.
What a wonderful blog.
Do I get brownie points for throwing out compliments?
Heather,
ReplyDeletePJM will ignore your insolence and inform you that your entry is not correct.
Ha! I have stumped you all. Perhaps the requirement of temperature data has proven to be the distraction needed to give me the edge.
PJM
Joni,
ReplyDeleteI am most impressed with the banter and temperature data in your post.
With that said, your entry (or your husbands?) is not correct.
PJM
How could you NOT pick Henry George (Harry)Ferguson, who revolutionized farming with his tractors? I'm beginning to think you don't really want a tractor at all and that you should let Mrs. PJM choose the Mystery Person next week.
ReplyDeleteHeather,
ReplyDeleteMrs PJM does not know about the blog, hence can not ask her assistance in picking mystery person.
Your insolence is continuing as you taunt me about not having a tractor, and hence not being a real gentleman farmer.
PJM
HA! I clearly remember Mrs. PJM making an entry on the blog when you were featuring cowboys on horses. Or was that just YOU making the entry pretending to be Mrs. PJM? Wow, maybe there isn't a Mrs. PJM, no chickens, no peacocks....and you'll never be a gentleman farmer because you aren't a farmer (and maybe not a gentleman). Well, if we are pretending, I'm going to pretend the Mystery Person is Harry Ferguson and I won...Yea! I'll get busy now and do my chores. :-)
ReplyDeleteNote to self;
ReplyDeleteStrategy to get under contestants skin is working. Victory is assured.
PJM
Heather, heh :)
ReplyDeleteStill 25° here, is it Lucius Beebe?
Joe,
ReplyDeleteSiding with Heather, huh?
Lucius Beebe is not correct.
Note to Self:
Start planning victory breakfast for in the morning.
PJM
Humph!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Heather, let Mrs. PJM choose the Mystery Person next week.
ReplyDeleteA balmy 32? This is the coldest
winter we've had in over 30 years,
so the weather people tell us.
Dairy farmers are pouring milk
down the drain, as they can't get
it to there distributors...
couldn't even buy a newspaper this
morning.
Joni,
ReplyDeleteRemember, each comment needs up to date temperature data.
PJM
49.3F @ 09:58. Left the Wind Rivers because my internal thermostat broke. Left Houston because I missed the mountains. Tucson - warm as Houston but dry and mountainous as Wyoming.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, for a wild and crazy moment I thought it might be George Champion, Canadian Superintendent of Parks, but then realized I was just tired of looking at photos. I thought the building looked British rather than American (depth of the steps plus pillars) so I wandered off into the weeds of British Diplomacy.
How about a hint?
It is now 22 degrees. Naaaate!
ReplyDeleteAacckk! Currently 24 here in the bucolic state of CT. (Still looking for the "degree" symbol on my keyboard, does that disqualify my reports?)
ReplyDeleteMathan,
ReplyDeleteYour excellent summary of weather conditions is noted. Also of note, if further background information on weather related details on your present habitation location.
With that being said, no hints will be given.
Note to self:
Perhaps Belgiam Waffles, hash browns, and Canadian Bacon would be suitable victory breakfast in the morning.
PJM
Joni,
ReplyDeleteDegree symbol is not required. I especially like your use of the word "bucolic". Please remember to include temperature data in each entry.
PJM
Pam,
ReplyDeleteNate will not save you. No one will save you. Victory is mine this week.
PJM
Now 29° here, warming up nicely.
ReplyDeleteJoni, the keyboard combination for ° is Alt + 0176. Elusive, but apparently not necessary.
It has warmed up to 17 below and 44 below wind chill.
ReplyDeleteI would hate to think how cold it would be if we didn't have global warming.
R
Mrs. PJM is at work today, so I am on my own for lunch. I am going to open two packages of Raman Noodles. I will add one opa sausage, chopped up. Then, I will add 1 Tbsp of Tobasco Sauce. Then, I will drop an egg in like an egg drop soup. Dont know if it will be any good, but should fill me up.
ReplyDeletePJM
My guess is Clement Attlee.
ReplyDeleteWarmed up to 31 here in Austin
Enjoy your lunch, PJM. It is now 25 degrees in western Wy at the foot of the wind Rivers. Up from 7. The sun in simply brillant.
ReplyDeleteNice to know that Mathan is also from WY. Riverton or Lander, perhaps? Wonder where Merideth is this morning.
Maybe we should all work together. Does anyone know what kind of strange top-loading briefcases those are in the picture? Maybe they went with a particular profession. I can't find anything like them on the internet.
I'll guess Fred Bell.
Well, after wandering off into a Canadian/Belgium connection (the physicists of the world photo in Brussells captured me for quite a while), I'm heading out to turn some bowls. Have fun.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, 54.1F @ 10:41 MST
Southern Bets,
ReplyDeleteI am at about 31 as well. Hopefully things will thaw this afternoon.
It is not Clement Attlee
PJM
Judi,
ReplyDeleteLunch was OK, but not that great. I put in too much sausage. The egg and tobasco were good though.
It is not Fred Bell.
PJM
Mathan,
ReplyDeleteWhat does "Turn some Bowls" mean?
PJM
P.S. Judi
ReplyDeleteLander, Class of '64, Reunion in July. Looking forward to it.
Almost forgot: 54.7F @ 10:44 MST
PJM
ReplyDeleteI have a mini lathe in the shed out back and a bunch of wood which I turn into shavings and hopefully wind up with a bowl still on the spindle.
55.2F @ 10:47 MST
It's not Sir Owen Willans Richardson is it?
Now 30 in Bellville, Tx. Something tells me that your receipe for breakfast & for lunch is a clue to the mystery man but I cannot identfy him.
ReplyDeleteMathan,
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I understand lathe/bowl work.
It is not Owen Willans Richardson .
PJM
Is it William Hadaway - designed the first toaster/cooker in 1910?
ReplyDeleteNow 33 in Bellville, Tx. Gonna be a little cool but pretty day down here.
It is 37 in middle georgia. I am not to proud to follow the luncheon idea -- How about Oscar Mayer?
ReplyDeleteIt is 37 in middle Georgia. I am not to proud to hazard a guess along the luncheon menu -- how about Oscar Mayer?
ReplyDeleteAnon in Beeville,
ReplyDeleteNot William Hadaway
PJM
Mjlegget,
ReplyDeleteNot Oscar Mayer.
PJM
No clue with 40 degrees (wet fog) in Bakersfield, California
ReplyDeleteRear Admiral Cary Grayson
ReplyDeleteWhite house Physician to Woodrow Wilson?
22 degrees in Portland, Maine - btw
ReplyDeleteRoss,
ReplyDeleteI would request that future entries include weather data in the post, not in a subsequent post.
With that said, Admiral Cary Grayson is not the mystery person.
PJM
I'll comply in subsequent posts as directed....
ReplyDelete(still 22 degrees and clear - which is normal this time of year)
We're up to a very warm 34°, sunny skies, and I still think the pictured man looks like Myron T. Herrick.
ReplyDeleteAnd since I couldn't get the interwebs to divulge anyone better, that's my final answer.
William Coolidge
ReplyDelete46, Panhandle of Texas
Joe,
ReplyDeleteAs much as I enjoy your dilligence in including weather data, I must inform you that it is not Myron T. Herrick.
PJM
Tequila Sheila,
ReplyDeleteNo it is not William Coolidge.
Wow, you are really warming up up there. Still only about 40 here.
PJM
Mathan: Did you know any girls named Duene. She may have been from Shoshoni.
ReplyDeleteI still have no presentable ideas for the Mystery Person. It's 31 in Pinedale.
Last try and then I have to get busy.
ReplyDeleteBenjamin Holt- inventor of the bigger, better tractor.
Still 46 degrees. But much better then the past two days.
Hubert Work 47th Postmaster General under Coolidge. 46 degrees here in Ca.
ReplyDeleteNot Benjamin Holt.
ReplyDeleteNote to Self:
Call Mrs. PJM and ask her to pick up some powdered sugar for my Belgiam waffles for victory celebration breakfast in the morning.
PJM
Anon,
ReplyDeleteNot Hubert Work.
Hmmm . . . maybe some blackberry jam would be good on the waffles.
PJM
It is now 25 degrees in western Pa. and sun shining bright overhead.
ReplyDeleteIs it John Deere? One of his tractors would be perfect for you!
Karen,
ReplyDeleteNot John Deere.
I think I have this one in the bag.
PJM
He looks like Billy Sunday, but he was a mystery person already. 38 degrees.
ReplyDeletePam,
ReplyDeleteNot Billy Sunday.
Wow, I might really win this week.
PJM
It is still 25 degrees.
ReplyDeleteIs it Harvey Firestone?
Karen,
ReplyDeleteWe have a Winner!!!!
It is Harvey Firestone.
Congratulations.
PJM
When are you going to put us out of our misery?
ReplyDeleteI'm tired of bumbling about the Internet like a blind lemming.
It's a bleak, dreary and dull 27ยบ (thanks Joe in NC)
Judi
ReplyDeleteThe only folks from Shoshoni I knew were the Bebouts, relatives of the Svilar's in Hudson. Nicki played offensive line for Seattle Seahawks.
When and where is Rendesvous this year?
Oh, yeah, 63.3F w/ scattered clouds at 13:45 MST
Sorry PJM, I'll be thinking about you when I am eating my victory breakfast tomorrow! Let's see - eggs with salsa, ham, hash browns. Mmmmm can't wait. :) Until next week!
ReplyDeleteCONGRATS, Karen! How did you do it? And who is Harvey?
ReplyDeleteIt does look as if you may win today, PJM, but won't your victory be a hollow one if you win without a guess from Nate?
ReplyDeleteI can't even come up with a lame guess.
Temp 21 here in southern Ohio
Judi,
ReplyDeleteHarvey was the founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Ohio. I lived near the Firestones for many years. Still 25 degrees here.
Sorry, my comment was late getting on-I kept being told my password was wrong.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the winner!
Still 21 here.
Karen,
ReplyDeleteThe breakfast taunt is cruel.
I will be eating post toasties.
PJM
Mathan:
ReplyDeleteRendezvous parade & street fair is July 10. The pageant is Sunday July 11. Always the 2nd Sunday in July.
PJM: Thanks for letting us chat here. It's 34 in western Wy. You know you're getting old when you're not out skiing on such a glorious day.
Karen: I like your attitude. A little sassy?
Harvey Firestone was very good friends with Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. They were known as the "Millionaires Club". They would go camping together, and would do business deals with each other on a handshake.
ReplyDeletePJM
Well done, Karen. Thought PJM
ReplyDeletemight win there for a while.
Karen, good job! Saved us from Mr. PJM's taunts until next week.
ReplyDelete(Joni, you're welcome.)
Must say I agree with R, if it weren't for all this global warming that's so prevalent, we'd surely be frozen.
41 degrees in my backyard (Houston)
ReplyDeleteContest is the not the same without our Gentleman Father, the Evil Nate Maas. (sob) Nate, did we drive you off?
Karen, good work! Sorry to be MIA this morning. The Boy Scouts had a Merit Badge Pow-wow this morning.
ReplyDeleteThought I should jump in and commiserate with you all on the weather. It's a gloomy 70° with cloudy skies here in California today. Hoping for an end to winter soon!
Nate, you're not frozen! Excellent, some of us were concerned.
ReplyDeleteNot frozen, thanks Joe! Although if it gets much colder out here, I may have to stop wearing shorts.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I did a quick scan of Firestone pictures. It appears as though Harvey had the pleasure of gentleman farming.

Merideth went to town today to buy a generator! Found a nice 8250W one that will run our whole house in an emergency (well we might have to shut off the water heater) and we can take it up to our mountain trailer in the summer! So the mystery person Mr. Firestone was solved by the time we got home. It's 60 miles to town for us--one way. And it's a balmy 37 degrees and suppose to stay fairly warm for the next two weeks!Mr. Firestone was a tough one -- 113 comments!
ReplyDeleteAn 8250W generator?!? A woman after my own heart. Do you have a tractor also?
ReplyDeletePJM
No wonder he looked so familar, but I couldn't put a name on his face, And I live less then 10 miles from the Firestone Farm which was near Columbiana, Ohio, which got all the way to 27 degrees today.
ReplyDeleteCharlie B
I KNEW I had seen that man in a newsreel! I once saw a film of Edison, Ford, etc on one of their 'camping' trips.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a good one today.
Currently 23 degrees F in lovely north Georgia.
If I remember correctly, the families intermarried -- (Firestone's and Ford's)
ReplyDeleteThe picture looked like the White House to me and I kept looking at different cabinet members...
Great job Karen!
It's 12 degrees here in Providence Rhode Island. The high today was around 21.
ReplyDeleteBut that's not unusual here at this time of the year.
We started a little chilly at -12, but warmed up to a toasty +9 in the Mill City. Too late for the mystery person.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteAs always I missed the Mystery Person Contest. Great work Karen.
ReplyDeleteAs for temperature, it was 41°c in Freshwater, Aus and I burnt the soles of my feet playing beach volleyball.
I feel for you guys in the cold but do miss wrapping up nice and warm.
I'm checking in on Monday morning and it is a sunny and delightful 78 here in Orange County, CA. Mwah!
ReplyDeleteStrangely - he looks like one of my neighbors, all dressed up.It is 37 here - soon to crash lower.
ReplyDelete
