ReplyDeleteLast night I put a heat lamp in the chickie coup. It is sealed nicely in that it has real windows, and doors that close and seal. I feel they should be OK at 11 with the heat lamp. Might not be toasty in there, but they huddle together on the perch, and the lamp should give them some heat. I did not put any heat in the peacock palace. I did close them up in there though. They dont like being couped up, and would rather roost on top of the palace, even when it is very cold. At least they are out of the wind. Hopefully when I go out this morning I will still have 6 peacocks, not 6 ice cubes. After it gets light, I will take them some warm water.

We keep the temp insdie about 70.

We heat with natural gas, and my gas bill was 160,00 in December.
We had days in a row that the temp never got above 10 below during the day.

ReplyDelete166 is not that bad, given the temps you have. I am sure losts of insulation is the key.
We use the fireplaces, and dont run the furnace. I can heat all winter on two cords of Mesquite. Mesquite is a very dense heavy wood, that burns very hot. I can get two cords delivered to my house and stacked for $350, which takes me through the winter. Only thing with mesquite is that it does put lots of creosote out, so you have to watch build ups in the chimney.

It's 7° here in beautiful Fort Wayne Indiana. Being a single parent on a tight budget I have to be the "furnace nazi" and keep the house at 60°. We have a lovely old home built in the 1920's. It has hard wood floors, arch shaped doorways, stucco textured walls and I'm sure not much insulation. We wear plenty of layered warm clothing, socks and slippers and we manage to keep comfortably warm (although my fingers are always cold).

ReplyDeleteWhen we lived in Abq., our house had a high ceiling and lots of clearstory windows. The house was situated wrong with the sun, so in winter we were in the shade and in summer we were in the sun. In the winter you could not keep the house warm. If you set the thermostat on 70, the furnace would run all the time, and the utility bill outrageous. So, we just set the thermostat on 60, and bundled up. You get used to it. When we moved here, #1 priority in designing the house was to have a toasty house in winter.

While I also seem to recognize the photo, I won't hazard a guess at this point as none of my research has provided this particular image.
ReplyDeleteI think 'the man' is sticking it too you for wood. Here in Southern Illinois seasoned oak is going for about $50.oo per pickup truck load. And it produces far less creosote to worry about.
One more thing a tractor would be useful for, cutting and hauling your own firewood.
The temperature here is currently 9.7 F.

ReplyDeleteInteresting info on firewood. Here, $175 per cord, stacked and delivered is the best deal. There are dozens selling firewood, and it goes for up to $250-$300 a cord. Interesting that there would be that much difference. I have both oak and mesquite. I prefer the mesquite as it burns much hotter than oak. Issue is loading the firebox with wood, and what temperature the house will be at in the morning. Using mesquite, I can keep the house warmer than with oak. I have tried several different things, and what works best is mequite, with the air choked back, it burns all night.
I use that powder to keep creosote from building up, but probably need to have a chimney sweep check things at the end of the season.

Shirley likes to keep the indoor temp at 72°; whereas, I would be fine with 66°. Our winter gas bill averages $85 monthly.

Merideth went to town today to buy a generator! Found a nice 8250W one that will run our whole house in an emergency (well we might have to shut off the water heater) and we can take it up to our mountain trailer in the summer! So the mystery person Mr. Firestone was solved by the time we got home. It's 60 miles to town for us--one way. And it's a balmy 37 degrees and suppose to stay fairly warm for the next two weeks!Mr. Firestone was a tough one -- 113 comments!
