Today is Saturday . . . the day I finally beat the Evil Nate Maas, My Arch-Nemesis. I doubt we will even hear a peep out of him today. Also, please note my scientific pole in upper left . . . over 75% of the people think Nate is cheating at this game. Well, today I put an end to his nonsense. There is no way he can get this one. No way ANY of you can get this one.Saturday, December 26, 2009
Saturday!
No way ANY of you can get this one.OK, your mission, should you decide to accept it . . . who is she, and what is she most remembered for? Oh, I almost forgot . . . if your initials are N.M., what did her Father do?

What? Is no one playing this morning?
ReplyDeleteNate . . . Naaaaaate . . . . are you out there Nate?
PJM...
ReplyDeleteLouise Cromwell, heiress who married Douglas McArthur in '22?
Ross,
ReplyDeleteHa! Not even close.
While it was a pretty pathetic entry, I am happy to see someone is playing.
PJM
PJM;
ReplyDeleteYou're right on the pathetic answer but I think there's a deluge of guesses building out there...
I'm sure now that you have thrown down the gauntlet, when he ges to it Nate will be surgical in his answer, quick, precise and exact...
Ross,
ReplyDeleteNo, I am afraid Nate is curled in the corner in the fetal position, afraid to rally even a guess.
Poor, poor Nate. This is the day he goes down to defeat.
PJM
yea Nates up
ReplyDeleteWHAT! Oh My! There is more that one Maas out there?
ReplyDeleteTim, I don't know who you are, but will give you the benefit of the doubt. Just because you are a Maas, I am willing to give you a chance. Just the type of guy I am.
PJM
Yep, I'm up. That was my son, Tim.
ReplyDeleteHello PJM,
ReplyDeleteUsually my working nights prevents me from playing so this is a treat.
A stab in dark here: Alice Roosevelt, the white house princess, daughter of Teddy

ReplyDeleteDAG,
ReplyDeleteFinally someone with the nerve to muster up an entry.
Masterful try, but unfortunately, not correct.
PJM
I think if I win today, Nate should agree that when we have the "Bury the Hatchet and End the Feud" meeting at the stone wall at Gettysburg in 2032, I get to wear the Rebel hat.
ReplyDeletePJM
Are you trying to tell me I'm fighting a lost cause?
ReplyDeletePJM shakes in fear as he sees Nate has posted on the blog. Slowly, he opens the message. Breathes sigh of relief as he sees Nate has not mustered up an entry yet.
ReplyDeleteNate,
I am the one who wants to wear the Rebel hat . . . maybe my cause is the lost one
PJM
Could it be Billie Burke.
ReplyDeleteThe Wizard of OZ
PJM's head slumps and he breathes a deep sigh. He sees that he must declare Ray in the UK the winner. He wonders how Ray could have gotten this as it is an obsure picture of Billie Burke. The answer he was looking for was, Billie Burke, the Good Witch of the North from Wizard of Oz, but he realizes he must declare Ray the winner, based on his "Wizard of Oz" mention.
ReplyDeletePJM admits defeat, and slowing walks out to Chickie Town, the only place he is completely appreciated and understood, and where the residents have never heard of OPOD mystery contest.
P.S.
ReplyDeletePJM scratches his chin and considers adding Ray to his Nemesis list.
Ray deserves a pat on the back. But PJM what did Billie Burke's father do ?
ReplyDeleteLet me take the time to tell Nate that I do not believe you chest, your just very resourceful.
Billie Burke's Father was a clown.
ReplyDeletePJM
Just from the way that you worded your challenge, I would almost be led to believe that it is someone in your own family... Say, your grandmother?
ReplyDeleteRick,
ReplyDeleteNo, Ray was correct, it was Billie Burke, Good Witch of the North in Wizard of Oz.
PJM
Ray, awesome work! I would have never guessed her.
ReplyDeletePJM, very sneaky, I would have never guessed someone good from the North, but you seem to know your Yankees better than I.
ReplyDeleteHope you all will tune in tomorrow. I have an idea for a different contest. Not a Win/Lose contest, but more of an experiment we can all participate in.
ReplyDeletePJM
Don't put me on the Nemesis List
ReplyDeletePJM. This was real luck. I typed
into Google Images, American
actress 1900s, which I've done
many times.
This time it paid off, she was on
the first page.
I don't think Nate does it like
that.
It sounds like you're creating problems yourself by trying to solve this issue instead of looking at why their is a problem in the first place.
ReplyDeleteWow - I would never have guessed the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz -- she was blonde in that one. But now that I look closely I can see it's her indeed. Good job Ray!
ReplyDeleteI would never have guessed that, at least from a side shot.
ReplyDeleteShe has a very Gibson-girl look in this shot.
PJM...
ReplyDeleteI'm a newbie to your Saturdays contests, but I already love them! Although I am not as knowlegeable as the venerable Nate Maas, I do try to google the answers on Saturdays. This weekend you caught me offguard as your picture was not relate to the theme of the week, men's facial hair! Great picture and contest though! Thanks
Thanks to all.
ReplyDeleteIt was the chin that caught my eye.
After getting the name, I looked it
up in Wikipedia.
It gave me The Wizard of OZ.
I could find no reference to her
father, although I didn't spend
much time on it.
When I put in my guess, I was
vaguely hopeful and surprised
when I found I'd won.
I think Nate & Son, chatting with
PJM gave me a very slight edge.
And of course, Luck.
Since I never have seen the WoO, I had no idea about this person. But the really old photos of her are captivating! She was a stunner! And how on earth did those Gibson girls get their hair to do that, without the products available to us today? I'd love to know more about that. Thanks again, PJM. Always fun to visit here.
ReplyDeleteKristi, please watch the Wizard of Oz, it's a wonderful fantasy. There are those who believe it is filled with political symbolism of the day but I never gave that a thought and enjoyed it simply because it both scared and amazed me as a child.
