Twining Ornithopter

Today we feature a picture of the Twining Ornithopter during attempted takeoff. Don't you wish just one of these old flapping wing type flying machines had worked? I think no one has yet been successful in flying any type of flapping wing device.

  1. I saw a program on the history channel that started with a small one, about 1 foot wing span. It flew so they built a larger one that flew also.
    So it has been done.
I would say the program was only a few years ago.

  2. I imagine with modern materials this is easily feasible. Whether is is really practical is another question.

  4. You can nearly hear the wings flapping.

  5. Amusing myself, I came across this site that shows some manned ornithoptic flights: http://www.ornithopter.org/manned.shtml

Although this concept doesn't capture my imagination as much as the early German Taube aircraft that aren't orinthopters, but instead regular aircraft that have a bird-like appearance: http://www.ornithopter.org/manned.shtml

I've always thought these would be neat to see in flight. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--NLkK74hNw&fmt=18
