Maine Fisherman

I worry about this guy. The picture was taken in 1886, and he is walking into the woods in Maine with (gulp) a fishing pole. Does he not know the woods in Maine are full of Axe Wielding, Knife Toting, Moonshine Guzzling Rednecks packing heat. Did he not see the pictures posted the last two days!?! Does the movie "Deliverance" come to mind? We can only hope he does not wander into one of the camps pictured earlier. Be afraid, Sir, be very afraid.

  1. Can't you just see his socks by the end of the day -- all full of burrs and stickers!

  2. I see that he has one of those round hats and oxford shoes on like the guy in the first photo.

  3. My grandfather (from Abita, LA) used to wear dress shoes to fish in. It was a class thing, I think.

As for rednecks in Maine - were they importing them or something?

  5. Fly fishing is a genteel sport and he is dressed for it. He looks like a walking advertisment for Orvis.

  6. Maybe the other guys in previous photos were terrified of meeting this one and his fishing pole.

I guess you've seen those Chinese martial arts films. You never know what someone is able to do with one's fishing pole :)

  7. Without seeing the reel more clearly it's impossible to tell if it's a fly reel or a spinning reel. I would venture to guess it's a fly reel and he's about to go commune with his spirit, as many who fly fish will tell you happens. As for his dress, I agree, he does look like an ad for Orvis. And, fly fishermen would never call it a fishing pole, that's far too common. It's a fishing rod. ;-)

(yes I know how to fly fish and have since I was 5)

  8. You can tell by the position of the reel on the pole that it is a fly fishing reel. Also the large holes in the side of the reel tell me that it is one also.
And yes I have fly fishe for many, many years.

  12. I, for one, would normally be the last to cast aspersions on our genial host's research, but...

Are we sure they are all from Maine?

They all look like they are "from away" to me...

  14. Clicked on the Maine heading. As a Mainer, we do not have rednecks here. We have native Mainers...who are a special and separate breed of guys. Perhaps when trying to find a word to describe a rugged Mainer, try Maniac.

This particular fellow does look like a "gent" from away and Maine has always been visited by vacationers.
