Street Vendor

This picture was taken in 1923, and shows a street vendor and his little cart. It is hard to tell what he is selling, but it looks like it might be items like maps and post cards.
Anyway, hope you all had a nice Christmas, and hope you have some time off between now and New Years. My wife had to go back to work today, but I am off for the next week.

  1. I like the flag he's got on his rig. Wondering about what looks like a light at the front ?

  2. I did a little more research and have found that he is not a street vendor, but was a person that for some reason was pushing the little cart all the way around the world. He did this between 1919 and 1924. I could not find any information as to why he was pushing the cart around the world, just that he did it. I am trying to see if I can figure out any of the writing on the side of the cart.

  4. Heather,
Funny you said that . . . I just found out that he went by the name "Happy Jack"

  5. I zoomed in on the writing, and it says the following:

Happy Jack Globe Trotter A Round World. A fool left Boston Mass April 1, 1919 to cover 99980 miles in 5 years time. All the foreign countris and 48 states in USA [List of states and countries}. Back to Boston April 1, 1924.

The front of the cart has a long list of countries he has visited. Item hanging on the back of the cart is a canteen of water. I could still find no reason he decided to walk around the world.

  6. PJM:

I hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas, and I wish you a happy and healthy New Year.

Your website is the brightest spot in my day.

  7. In today's world, such a person would not be referred to as a "fool" by the press. He is a curiosity, and that should be the correct characterization, no matter the guy's reasoning.

Perhaps he wished to be an ambassador to the world for peace. Or at least happiness, for being known as "Happy Jack."

How did you come across this person?

  8. Dave,
Point of clarification . . . he describes himself as a "fool". That is what he wrote on the side of the cart. He does not say why he is walking around the world.

I did find that there was a thing called "Globe Trotting" at the turn of the last century where people would do just what he is doing . . . walking around the world.
