New York City Firemen

This photograph was taken in 1913, and shows the New York City Fire Department with one of its first motorized firetrucks. If you look over to the right, you can see one of the earlier horse drawn ones used by the city. I always wanted to be a fireman, but that is one thing I have never done. The little community that I live in has about 400 people, and does not have a normal fire department, but has a volunteer department. If there is a fire, the whistle blows, and the firemen drive down to the station. I have always thought about being a volunteer fireman, but have just never done it.

  1. The correct title for those persons who combat fires is "Fire Fighter". A fireman is found on the railroads and is one who builds, stokes or tends a fire. Fire fighters, on the other hand, do their best to ensure the fire is put out as soon as possible.

  2. wounderful photos
came across your site / blog by change I too love old photos and books with them in.

Re Fire Fighter in UK they are called Firemen there union is firemans Union Not fire fighters

    keep it up

  3. In our small town, we have a volunteer fire department, it is an honor and privilege to be one of the 'Volunteer Fire Boys'.

  4. I've been a volunteer fire fighter for 25 years- the last 15 as Chief.
You really should see about joining your local department, as they usually need more help- and the training is something that, afterwards, you will really wonder how you ever got along without a lot of it. PS nice site! I really liked the story of the frozen (and burned) snake!
