I wonder if a regular guy today could just build an airplane in his barnyard? A la the joke about Noah couldn't build the ark because of permits, EPA and OSHA prohibitions. We're not really allowed to take the leap of faith any more, are we?
Not sure where you are, Norkio, but yes, we can. And yes, we do. There are more airplanes built at home every year in the USA than there are in factories. Look up the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) or their annual event at Oskosh, Wisconsin. www.eaa.org or www. airventure.org should get you there! I personally know about ten people who are currently building an airplane, or have already competed one.
