President Taft

This is a picture from 1908 showing President Taft on a train. I like all the hats people are wearing in the picture. I think it is too bad that no one wears cool hats anymore. Maybe you will see somone in a baseball cap every once in a while, but hat wearing has really fallen out of fashion these days.

  1. My dad, who is 93, still wears a hat, the type that men wore with suits and coats in the 1950s. I think it's called a "fedora."

Also, my Uncle Tony (who was my dad's older brother), used to wear the caps shown on the men in the front row of the photo. He was quite a guy.

That picture made me think of him.

  2. When I was growing up in the 80's, my father wore a hat (probably not a fedora, but similar-looking) to walk to and from the train station to commute into the city.

Anyway, I agree. People need to start wearing more hats.

  3. At first I was going to say that the etiquette that goes along with hat wearing is too difficult, but then I realized that learning and practicing such etiquette might bring back some of the more noble behaviors that have disappeared with hats.

  4. I am new here but I really like what you are doing. The photos and especially the teaching. I was a teacher for 32 years, a no more noble profession exists....best of luck...May you be as excited and enthusiastic at the end of the year as you are at the beginning.

  5. Norkia,
I was sort of thinking the same thing . . . I think that there was a certain civility that went with hat wearing that has been lost. A man in a fine felt fedora was a gentleman.

Mr. Thakerary . . . thanks for the kind words. I am about to make it through the first week as a teacher, and I have found it to be an incredibly rewarding experience. The other teachers have been so kind and helpful to me, and the students are really eager to learn, and have been giving me such positive feedback everyday. Hope things continue to go well.

  6. I love hats. I have a great collection of trilby's and fedora's and will not leave the house without one. I even purchased bowler the other day too!
