Nagasaki Bombed

On this day, August 9, in the year 1945, the United States dropped the second atomic bomb, Fat Man, on the city of Nagasaki. It is estimated that over 70,000 people were instantly killed. Six days later the Japanese surrendered, and the war ended. The photograph above shows the mushroom cloud moments after the blast.

  2. I always thought that it was the greatest tragedy in human history that the Japanese forced us to drop two nuclear bombs on them before they surrenedered. Seriously what could they have been thinking after the first one was dropped that made them want to continue the war?

  3. Andrew,
I have wondered the same thing . . . even after the second one it took another six days to surrender. I wonder if the people in charged really believed the reports of the devastation. Maybe they doubted the reports they were getting.
