This photograph was taken in 1895, and shows Calamity Jane. Calamity Jane was a colorful figure from the Old West. She was friends with Wild Bill Hickock, and in later years was a member of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Calamity Jane died on this day, August 1, in the year 1903. 3. Yes, let me say it again: a wonderful site. So have you heard the story as to how Martha Jane Cannary-Burke, a/k/a, Calamity Jane, got that particular nickname? Popular history has it coming from her career as an Army scout in the Wild West. The less well known history has Wild Bill giving Jane her famous monaker Calamity. "The Calamity" being Wild West slang for VD.
