Today we feature a picture of Martha Jane Burke, AKA Calamity Jane. The picture was taken in 1901, which would have been 2 years before her death in 1903. Calamity Jane was a genuine frontier woman. Her family lived on the frontier in Utah, and by the time she was 15 both of her parents had died. She took responsibility for raising her 5 brothers and sisters. During her life she served as a scout for the US army, was an Indian fighter, and was good friends with Wild Bill Hickock. Later in life she was a star attraction in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.Monday, March 17, 2008
