Howard Carter

Today we feature a portrait of Howard Carter. Howard was a noted archaeologist who on this day, January 3, in the year 1924, discovered the sarcophagus of King Tutankhamun in the Valley of Kings in Egypt.
On a side note, I like his top hat. I wonder when the top hat fell out of fashion?

  2. I have always, ALWAYS loved top hats! I think you should spearhead a campaign to bring them back, Paul :)

  3. Clew,
I love hats. Given that I live in a small community of about 300 people in a remote area of West Texas, I am afraid I am not in much of a position to start a new fashion trend.

  4. Top hat fell out of fashion when the silk loom was smashed, and bankers didn't want to look like commoners or bankers. Seemed everyone was wearing them down to the lowliest street bum, when they used to stand for wealth and gentlemanry. Also fashion changed and you'll look like an idiot wearing one in anything less than a draping coat or morning suit/tails.

I have 2, one US and one German, both silk but different crown height.

  5. WOW! Your blog is just so much fun! What a great photo of an impressive man on a fantastic day in a snappy top hat and tails!!! King Tut also wore impressive head gear. Yes...bring back dignified dressing. Betty

  6. Loving the top hat, tails, bowtie, vest and subtley tweed pants. Bet it was all British Kaki, wool knee socks and pith helmet for him while working though. Betty
