General Store

This is a photograph from 1936. It shows a General Store in Moundville, Alabama. It is fascinating to look at a picture like this and then think about a Wal-mart. My how things have changed.

  1. I long for a store that only has one of everything. Then I could spend my time thinking about better things than what soap to buy! Choice is highly overrated.

  2. I have talked to people who have moved here from other countries. They are sometimes overwhelmed by too many choices. Some have even told me it is like they get motion sickness going into stores with too much stuff and too many choices.

  3. Sylvia is right. Too much choice is why I never got married. There should only be one woman in the world. Hmm, on the other hand, possibly not. :-)

  5. How cool. Moundville is the town next door to mine. That just makes the picture even more cool.

Interesting . . . I wonder if the store is still there? I could use one of those lanterns.

  7. Actually, I worked at the Children's Hands-On Museum here in town during my freshman year in college and they had a permanent exhibit set up with materials from the original general store here in Tuscaloosa and it looks a lot like that.
